MATTHEWS Jeanne Brooks Matthews, a figure skating

judge on the East Coast for more than four decades, died March 26, 2016, after a short stay in the hospi- tal. She was 85 years old. Jeanne traveled extensively to judge competi-

tions, logging 40,000 miles a year for her voluntary contribution to the sport. Her career included judg- ing skaters on their international-level tests. A native of Swansea, Wales, she resided in Bald-

winsville, New York, for many years until her passing. Mrs. Matthews received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wales, and taught math and phys- ical education in England until she moved to the United States in 1963. She trained with the British gymnastics team and was an avid tennis and netball player.

She was involved in the lives of her family and

always went out of her way to help anyone who asked.

Jeanne met her husband, John H. Matthews,

former Syracuse University professor, when they were only 12 years old. They were inseparable until his passing in 1987, enjoying 45 years together with 32 years as husband and wife. She was predeceased by her son, Jonathan Matthews in 2004, and by her

brother, Gerald Brooks (Germany) in 1989. She is survived by her daughters Annette

(John) Keil of Canastota, New York, and Sian (Robert) Boycheck of Baldwinsville; her daughter-in-law Clara Matthews (DelVecchio) of Baldwinsville; her grand- daughter Melissa Matthews; her grandsons John Matthews, Steven Keil, Kenneth Keil, and Matthew Boycheck; and several nieces and nephews in the United Kingdom and in Germany. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting do-

nations be made to Hope Lodge in New York City. Donations can be made online at https://donate. cancer.org/index?campaign=hl08nynyrun.

DOWLEN Yvonne Dowlen, an inspiration to many for her

seven-decade-plus career on the ice, passed away on May 2, 2016, enjoying her favorite sport of ice skating. She was 90. A Colorado resident, Yvonne competed regu-

larly at the U.S. Adult Championships, where she was revered by generations of skaters for her talent, per- severance and love of the sport. At the 2007 U.S. Adult Championships in

Bensenville, Illinois, the judges applauded her spunk and talent following her performance.

“I probably enjoy it more now, and you know

why?,” Dowlen, then 81 years old, said. “Because I can still get out there and do it. It’s not as good, but hey, I’m there and I’m doing it.” The former Ice Capades skater practiced an

hour a day, five days a week at the Apex in Arvada, Colorado. She has a rich history in sports and has done everything from playing badminton to ski racing to synchronized swimming, but skating has always been a major part of her life. Yvonne and her daughter, Sherry, were mem-

bers of Billie O’Neel’s club years ago. Sherry is a multi-time champion at the U.S. Adult Champion- ships.

“Miss Yvonne inspired so many and was a great

ambassador for adult figure skating,” O’Neel said. “It was only fitting that she glided into heaven from the very ice she loved so much.” Dowlen was also a longtime skating coach and

teacher. “After my mom died, this beautiful woman took

me under her wings,” adult competitor Angie Miske said. “I am so sad yet blessed.” She’s survived by her children, Bret Dowlen and

Sherry Dowlen.
