for the first time. “I’m all for adopting, because there are so many dogs who need homes. I can’t adopt all the dogs in the world, even though I wish I could. “I went to the humane society with

Agnes Zawadzki [two-time U.S. bronze medalist] and we saw Lincoln. He was so skinny and looked so sad. He’s one of those dogs that when you look at him, he just melts your heart. He’s so cute. We took him home that day.” Lincoln is a brown pug and Cavalier

King Charles spaniel mix. He follows his owner everywhere she goes, and has driv- en and flown with Nagasu back home to California. “Every night he sleeps in my arms

because he gets cold at night, so he’s like a breathing teddy bear,” said Nagasu, who now lives in an apartment. Liberty, a mixed-breed black dog, is

Nagasu’s “guardian protector.” “She sleeps near the door at all times

to make sure everything is OK,” Nagasu said.

Nagasu gets up every morning at

7, puts on her Pic® Skates (similar to Rollerblades) and takes the dogs for a run before going to practice. “Tey love it,” she said, “and

it’s a lot of fun for me, too. I get to enjoy the sun and the beautiful Colorado mountains. I take them out for 30 minutes. I’m trying to raise their stamina a little bit, but it’s

hard for them, especially Liberty. When she’s done running on the pavement, she just stops and sits down on the grass and won’t get up.” Nagasu admits she spoils her dogs,

usually offering up food whenever they beg.

“I’m not supposed to give them too

much, but you know it’s hard not to spoil your dogs because they are like your kids. I’m a sucker for their puppy-dog look. I’m obsessed with them.” Spoiling them even more, Nagasu

has signed up both dogs with a pet sub- scription, in which they each receive a box of toys and treats each month. “A little package comes in the mail

and my dogs love them so much; they help me open the boxes,” she said. “Every month there’s a new theme. Like for Hal- loween, we get Halloween toys and treats.

Nagasu and her dogs enjoy the wintertime in Colorado.

It’s so much fun. I would recommend it.” On the weekends, Nagasu takes Lincoln

and Liberty to a dog park to play, or they just take it easy. “As much as they love the outdoors, they

are really lazy, so it’s nice to be able to sleep in with them on the weekends,” she said. In the future, Nagasu hopes to welcome

another member to her family and name him or her Justice.
