2016 NATIONAL THEATRE ON ICE COMPETITION
armony Teatre Company of Hartland, Michigan, continued its dominance of theatrical skating, winning four of five divisions it en- tered at the 2016 National Teatre
on Ice Competition, held June 30–July 1 in Birmingham, Alabama. Te teams from the Ice House Skating
Academy claimed top honors in the senior, junior, novice and adult divisions. Its open team secured a silver medal; Houston Starz Teatre on Ice and San Francisco Ice Teatre also enjoyed strong showings. Hosted by the Birmingham Figure Skat-
ing Club, the ninth annual National Teatre On Ice Competition (TOI) featured 72 teams with more than 1,200 skaters, hailing from Seattle to Boston. Tis rapidly growing team event combines the grace of figure skat- ing with the excitement of theater and dance. “Te community surrounding TOI
is amazing,” said Cindy Harper, competi- tion chair for the event. “Coming into this event, we were so excited to showcase some Southern flair and the great facility in Bir- mingham, and our volunteers and rink staff have done a fantastic job of pulling off the first TOI event we’ve experienced.”
Hosting the event has been a commu-
nity affair. “Even the EMTs are collecting pins!” Harper joked. For the Birmingham Figure Skating Club,
hosting the competition provided an opportunity to test the frozen waters of Teatre On Ice. Te club formed teams in the open and preliminary categories and experienced a strong showing, placing eighth and seventh, respectively. “Getting to experience the performance
and theatrical qualities of it, we’ll definitely have a team competing in Evansville,” Harper said. Te 2017 National TOI Competition will be hosted in Evansville, Indiana, next June.
