P FAITHFUL COMPANIONS by TROY SCHWINDT
ETS CHERISHED IN THE LIVES OF NAGASU, SCIMECA AND KNIERIM After a long day of training at the
World Arena Ice Hall in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Team USA members Mirai Na- gasu, Alexa Scimeca and Christopher Kn- ierim, can count on one thing: Teir pets will be overjoyed to see them when they pull into the driveway. Waiting for Nagasu are her two dogs,
patriotically dubbed Lincoln and Liberty. Te 2008 U.S. champion and 2010 Olym- pian adopted them from a humane society after moving from California to Colorado to train under coach Tom Zakrajsek in the spring of 2014. Newlyweds Scimeca and Knierim, the
2015 U.S. pairs champions, routinely en- joy their version of Animal House, with cats Scarlet and Muffy and dogs Cami and Die- sel. Cami is short for “camshaft,” which is an automotive part, in honor of Knierim’s love affair with cool cars. Nagasu, who had a Chihuahua named
Kosuke — named after Japanese Olympic champion swimmer Kosuke Kitajima — while living in California, adopted Lincoln shortly after moving in with her host fami- ly in Colorado Springs. Kosuke still lives at Nagasu’s parents’ house. “I really wanted a companion,” said Nagasu, who was living away from home
Nagasu, Liberty and Lincoln are big fans of Nulo Pet Food.
Below, Mirai Nagasu and Lib- erty joined Alexa Scimeca and Chris Knierim and their two
dogs, Cami and Diesel, at U.S. Figure Skating Headquarters Pet Day in early June.
