Teir clay model wedding cake topper included all four pets, and each specialty drink was named in honor of a pet. “Each drink was specific to the pet’s per-
sonality,” Scimeca said. “So Scarlet, since she’s a little, dainty fashionista, she had a fruity cocktail signature drink. Muffy is a little bit larger; she was a chocolate liqueur. Cami was a mixed whiskey drink, while Diesel, because he’s a baby [4 months old], was a nonalcoholic drink. Like a Sprite- mixed drink for children. We included pictures of the pets on the signature drink labels.” Scarlet actually played a major role in Knier-
im’s marriage proposal, as he tied the engagement ring onto a white satin dress that was custom- made for the feline. “I threw a ball into Alexa’s room and watched
little Scarlet run after it,” Knierim said. “I waited about a minute and walked in. I got down on one knee and the rest is history.” Knierim describes Scarlet as “super curious,”
while Muffy is more of a “lovey-dovey” cat. “She likes to get scratched, while Scarlet likes to do her own thing.” Scimeca and Knierim adopted their cats
from a local PetSmart store. In lieu of wedding favors, they asked for donations at the reception that would go to a local animal shelter. “Because animals are such a big part of our
lives, we had dog bone-shaped cookies and cat cookies for people to take home,” Scimeca said. “A second donation was to the Memorial Fund, because without it we wouldn’t be as successful as

we are.” Scimeca and Knierim recently moved into a
bigger house, with a backyard and dog park near- by.
“Tey all interact great,” Knierim said of
the four pets. “We are very lucky. When the dogs start to get a little rowdy and want to play, the cats peace out and they leave. Tey walk around each other. Both the cats have licked both the dogs’ faces.”
Muffy and Scarlet “We are lucky all four love each other,” Sci-
meca added. “Tey can all be in the same room together and it’s not like some kind of cat and dog fight.”
Te couple acquired Cami and Diesel —
both Bernese mountain dog-St. Bernard mixes — about a year after adopting the cats. Tey checked out animal shelters and ended up driving to Den- ver, where a woman had a litter of puppies. One of them, Cami, followed the couple around the house.
“Tey only had a few girls and I wanted a
boy at first, but we fell in love and took her home that day,” Knierim said. “Also, we were looking for a breed that didn’t
need much playtime because of our heavy sched- ule,” Scimeca added. Several months later, Knierim decided that
Cami needed a playmate. Coincidentally, the same woman that they purchased Cami from called them about a new litter of Bernese moun- tain dog-St. Bernard puppies. While Scimeca was reluctant about adding a second big dog (Cami weighs 105 pounds) to the family, Knierim really wanted a boy. “So we went down there with Cami to make
sure she could get along with another dog, and Diesel would just follow Cami around and play with her,” Knierim said. “And Diesel was the big- gest boy. He was a little chunker. “We brought Diesel home and we’ve had
him for a couple of months. He fits in perfect- ly. He’s a little different than Cami. He’s more talkative. He doesn’t know what personal space is. He’s 55 pounds now but will grow to 130 pounds.” With the summer temps regularly hitting the 90s, the dogs find refuge in the cool basement while Scimeca and Knierim are at practice. “Tey’ll lay down on the
tile,” Knierim said. “I did shave them myself, so they look great.” “And we put that on Twit-
ter,” Scimeca said. Scimeca and Knierim live
within a few minutes of the rink and check in on their pets during the day. “And we have plenty of
friends here in Colorado who will help us out with the dog- and cat- sitting while we travel,” Scimeca said.
Newlyweds Scimeca and Knierim are fond of their cat, Scarlet, who helped Knierim with his wedding proposal a couple of years ago.
