Sacramento Division
Southern Pacific
Leadville, Colorado & Southern GP9 No. 1918 passes the water tank at French Gulch during a photo runby on July 23. This may have been the fi rst runby in NRHS convention history to be held at an elevation above 11,000 feet. STEVE BARRY PHOTO
Saturday morning saw another long bus The time from the late-1950s
until the mid-1990s were years of transition and decline of the SP’s influence in the west;
however, the photographs and extended captions presented
here emphasize the railroad in its former, healthy condition. With 223 photographs by
45 photographers, Southern Pacific: Sacramento Division presents a thorough look at SP’s main line and branch line operations from Dunsmuir to
Fresno, and from Sacramento to Ogden. The presentation illustrates the dramatic geographic and geologic
conditions through which the Southern Pacific’s various Sacramento Division lines were built, from pastoral
farming land, to deserts, to rugged mountains.

ride, this time to 10,200 feet in elevation at the city of Leadville, Colo. The Leadville, Colorado & Southern took attendees not only to the end of regular operations, but for another three miles beyond that towards the mine at Climax (only the fourth train in 30 years to venture on that trackage). On the return trip a pair of photo runbys was held at Dry Gulch Tank, possibly the first runbys in NRHS convention history to be held at an elevation above 11,000 feet. (Interestingly, these were the only true runbys scheduled for the convention where passengers deboarded the train just for photos.) Okay, I admit it — I had my doubts about
the Sunday activity. Union Pacific ran its annual train for the Denver Post to Cheyenne Frontier Days on Saturday, and the trainset had to be ferried back to Cheyenne on Sunday. For a variety of logistical reasons, the NRHS could not ride the trip (which, by all indications, was going to be diesel-powered). So, the convention committee decided to do a chase bus, with 57 photographers onboard. The bus was long sold out before it was
announced that 844 would indeed be ready in time for the trip. Thanks to Ed Dickens and UP officials on the ground, permission was given to take the bus into the UP yard for some photos before departure. Then the bus headed to the first “runby” location at Brighton, Colo. Amazingly, after 844 passed the bus got loaded and actually got ahead of the train by Gilcrest. Finally, using the servicing stop at Greeley to get ahead once more, a final shot was accomplished at Ault. It might have been a low-key convention compared to some of the past, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. On to Nashville! — S.B.
Ummmm, About That August Centerspread... Yes, we are aware our centerspread
contest winner didn’t actually wind up on the centerspread in the August 2016 issue. This situation is entirely my fault; we had shuffled some pages to make room for the AEM-7 Farewell Trip report, and I forgot I needed to reshuffle the pages within the contest feature to make it work. Our apologies to winner Michael Sadovnick and you, our readers. We’ll get it right next year. — S.B.
