of himself, “I am eager to watch the landscapes and riv- ers and ocean inlets, the passing seasons, and the forest and mountain ecolo- gy.” Of the train, he adds, “What a wonderful chance to get away from work habits and duties!” As an accredited greenhouse gas an- alyst, that trains are a “low carbon

output” form of transportation is, for him, no doubt icing on the cake. 20th Century Limited: American docu- mentary filmmaker Rich Luckin has finally achieved one of his long-standing goals, to apply his skill at capturing the essence of fa- mous passenger trains to a noteworthy east- ern train. The release of his newest project, 20th Century Limited: America’s Most Fa- mous Passenger Train, brings to life the gold- en age of American rail passenger service in the first half of the namesake century, when “the Century and the Chief” was the way to get from New York to Los Angeles. Using in- terviews, vintage footage, modern settings, and enthusiastic commentary from actor — and railfan — Michael Gross, the film traces the history of the pride of the New York Cen- tral System, that ran on swift — briefly with- in 16 hours — schedule overnight between New York and Chicago. Typically operating in three 14-car sections, but once in as many as seven sections, each section was staffed by as many as 50 railroad and Pullman Compa- ny employees. Luckin’s forte, it seems to me (and I have

been a participant on several occasions, in- cluding this time), is his ability to weave expert testimony, firsthand accounts, peri- od-authentic commentary, documentary pic- tures and film, and his own quality videog- raphy, into a complete and compelling story, all within the 56-minute window required for broadcast consideration for PBS and else- where. His previous efforts include a fantastic documentary on New York City’s Grand Cen- tral Terminal, and this new production is a great companion program to that. In seven “chapters,” the DVD traces the

launch of the train in 1902, through its most notable version, the 1938 Henry Dreyfus-de- signed streamlined, all-room train, to its last major renovation, the 1948 version that was again the work of Henry Dreyfus, to its de- mise in 1968. Bonus footage includes a num- ber of passengers recounting their experience with the train, a slide show of Matt Donnel- ly photographs of Amtrak’s equivalent, the Lake Shore Limited, the presentation of six William H. Foster artworks depicting the train in the 1920s, plus 15 line drawings from Edward Hungerford’s 1930 railroad-commis- sioned book Run of the Twentieth Century, and nine works of art by six contemporary railroad artists. Each of these items is available at Ama-

zon.com and through other online retailers, as well as your preferred local independent outlets.
