LNG Units for FEC Experimental liquid natural gas
(LNG) ES44AC units 801 and 802 were nearing completion of their retrofit at
GE’s Erie, Pa., facility during July. LNG fuel tender No. 301 was observed being readied for trials at the plant. This set should be returned to the Florida East Coast Railway for testing in September. This development comes on the heels of local protests regarding an LNG plant to be located on the railroad near Orlando. Approval was still pending for the plant as of mid-July. Local first responders are indicating they lack the ability to handle any emergencies at the facility in their current state. The FEC not only wishes to be powered by LNG but to ship it in large quantities. The FEC also began port operations in
July at Port Miami. They are marketing a service from there that will link most major cities within 1,000 miles within four days. The MOL Majesty was the first ship unloaded onto FEC trains on
July 9; it was a ship that recently made use of the newly enlarged Panama Canal which allows Pacific traffic to more easily access eastern ports.

a $1.3 million grant to fund replacement of ties on four miles of track as part of New York State’s Freight Rail Assistance Program. This marks the first state investment in the shortline in nearly ten years. The railroad was formed in 1982 to take over operation of Delaware & Hudson’s former subsidiary Greenwich & Johnsonville, and interchanges with Pan Am Railway at Eagle Bridge, N.Y. A feed mill and a fertilizer plant are the railroad’s primary customers. The
Susquehanna Reflector
A trio of Susquehanna “yellow jacket” EMD SD60s leads the Wednesday edition of the tri-weekly westbound road train to Binghamton, N.Y., on the beautiful afternoon of July 20. The train casts a reflection into the waters of the Passaic River while crossing from Paterson to Hawthorne, N.J., one of the lesser photographed locations along this colorful regional railroad. Normally nocturnal schedules present a challenge for local photographers seeking to capture scenes like these.
