Reading & Northern Bridge Project
The construction of a new bridge
across the Lehigh River to create a connection between two divisions of Reading & Northern is going forward with the announcement of a second $5 million grant by the Pennsylvania State Transportation Commission. The $14 million project includes construction of a new three-span bridge across the Lehigh River at Nesquehoning, Pa., and the construction of 1,200 feet of new track, according to the Standard-Speaker newspaper. Known as Nesquehoning Bridge Phase II, it will create a direct route from Philadelphia to Binghamton,
N.Y., using R&N’s two divisions and Norfolk Southern-owned trackage.
New Watco Transload in Sandusky

Welded Rail for Louisville & Indiana With this summer’s maintenance-of-
way season, the last of the jointed rail on the south end of the Louisville & Indiana

Changes in Store for San Francisco Bay?
As this issue went to press, the San Francisco Bay Railroad was to vacate San Francisco’s Pier 80 by August 1. But with the possibility of autos being shipped by rail to the port, this suspension may be temporary. On July 23, Alco S2 No. 23 returned from Pier 80, crossing the Illinois Street lift bridge en route to the railroad’s yard on the other side of the Islais Creek Channel. SFBR began operations in 2000, taking over from the old San Francisco Belt Railroad, formerly the State Belt Railroad founded in 1889 to serve the Port of San Francisco.

Pennsy Tribute
The Louisville & Indiana road job is in Louisville, Ky., just south of Clagg Tower, picking up its interchange from Norfolk Southern on July 17 with three of its snappy- looking GP38-3s painted Tuscan red with lettering inspired by the Pennsylvania Railroad. The 106-mile route between Indianapolis and Louisville was purchased from Conrail in 1994, and is owned by Anacostia Rail Holdings.
