From east to west, crossovers in downtown Dallas are located at Forest Avenue, Reunion, Industrial Crossover (just west of DUPT), and Browder. This stretch of track doesn’t see a lot of traffic, and reverse-signaled CTC and


four crossovers give the dispatcher a lot of options, but traffic jams do occur. This is especially true when Amtrak 21 or 22 is close or a DGNO transfer is stopped or switching on one of the mainline tracks. The Dallas Sub sees a fair number of double-stack (symbol “I” on the UP) and Z trains stemming from the merger of UP and Mopac in 1982. The merger led to the revitalization of the Texas & Pacific across west Texas into Dallas, and this


this stretch of railroad that is only three- and-a-half miles long? First, despite the presence of other trains, the dispatcher needs to ensure the Texas Eagle gets to the track next to the outermost platform at DUPT. Doing so requires ample operating flexibility. Second, DGNO trains have a habit of occupying one of the two main tracks while switching Cadiz and CJ Yards a little west of the Dallas Convention Center (“Reunion” on the railroad), and its trains often will sit there for a good 15 minutes or longer while the brakeman throws switches. Third, when a BNSF freight comes onto UP’s Main 1 at JFK Junction, the UP dispatcher will often cross it over to Main 2 at Forest Avenue so it can then diverge onto the Waxahachie (or simply “Waxie”) lead of the DFW Sub. However, if another move is using Main 1 near Forest Avenue, the dispatcher can cross
