RIGHT: As seen from Cedar Crest Boulevard on November 2, 2013, a DGNO transfer freight works the yard at Cadiz, stretching all the way from its east end to Forest Avenue. As you can see, DGNO has a rainbow of paint schemes on its locomotive roster. BELOW RIGHT: On October 4, 2014, UP symbol ILBDI (Intermodal, Long Beach, Calif.–Dallas Intermodal Terminal) passes the Waxie lead on Main One at Forest Avenue. At Miller Crossover (CPT T213) the train will head straight, passing through Trinity Junction and past Miller Yard, and travel ten miles down the Ennis Sub to Wilmer, Texas, where the Dallas Intermodal Terminal resides.

headed for the automotive distribution center and yard at Mesquite for switching often enter the first track south of Main 2 known as the “pass.” This happens when there’s congestion in Mesquite and therefore not enough room for another train to do its work. As soon as working space frees up at the facility, the dispatcher gives the eastbound a light to proceed and throws the switch for the mainline. I’ve seen trains wait as long as a couple of hours in the pass before getting the light to head for Mesquite. By entering the pass, such trains allow other eastbound moves to get by while they’re waiting. The jewel of the Dallas skyline is 720-foot Fountain Place, a blue-green structure with a triangular crest completed in 1986. Around February 21 and October 20 of each year, the afternoon sun reflects directly off the 921-foot Bank of America Plaza, the tallest building in Dallas, shooting rays obliquely along the southern edge of the Trinity River Bridge. Immediately west of and facing DUPT stands the distinctive Hyatt Regency Dallas, which opened in 1978. Its blue-green mirrored glass provides a striking backdrop to train movements passing the station. Immediately north of UP’s Trinity

River Bridge stands a new structure, one quite different from all others in the downtown area. With a single, 400-foot white arch at its center, the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge supports the Woodall Rogers Freeway using multiple cables. From Commerce Street near the river, south of the railroad, the new span provides an elegant backdrop for trains crossing the Trinity’s flood plain. The bridge, opened March 29, 2012, was designed by the famous Spanish engineer-architect Santiago Calatrava, who now resides in New York City.

Union Terminal An excellent location to watch trains

in downtown Dallas is Union Terminal. Station parking costs $5.00, and you can enter the lot at the corner of Houston Street and Reunion Boulevard. DUPT has three platforms. The first two tracks are for DART, the next two for TRE, and
