“ Coffee Culture

Brilliant sunshine and porous volcanic soil make the Big Island of Hawaii perfect for growing Kona, one of the world’s finest gourmet coffees, harvested here since 1900. Back then, during coffee-bean harvest season, schools would close so that the children could help their parents fill burlap sacks with bright red “cherries” for delivery to the local mill. Go back in history for a taste of life back then at the Kona Coffee Living History Farm.

Lava Lore

Think of Kilauea as the world’s only drive-in volcano as you navigate the 10-mile crater rim road. Pass wheezing steam vents, breathtaking overlooks, prehistoric pit craters, a parasitic shield dome, curtains of fire, and lava tubes cool to the touch. According to the locals, Pele, the volcano’s unpredictable goddess, is behind the constant lava spewing eruptions of this hot-headed natural wonder, which makes your drive around the caldera more exciting still...

I really enjoyed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – our Tauck Director and the park rangers provided a tremendous amount of information. I learned a new word, ‘Vog’ – it is volcanic fog!

– DIANE ROBIE, OK

Guarded by a Goddess

To get to Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa with Tauck, you’ll pass through the “Tunnel of Trees,” a mile-plus stretch of Australian eucalyptus trees planted by sugar king Walter Duncan McBryde over a century ago. Further down the coastal road, you’ll hear the hiss of the lava tube, Spouting Horn, believed to be the roar of a trapped lizard goddess who used to eat any living creature who dared pass by. When you arrive at your resort and are greeted with a fragrant flower lei, you might not blame that lizard goddess for wanting to keep this place to herself!
