YOSEMITE & SEQUOIA: JOHN MUIR’S CALIFORNIA
They are places of giants, from rocks and trees to men and memories that grow larger with the retelling. They are living, breathing, lasting reminders of the man who fought to save them in 1890 so that you could savor them in the future. Stand in awe before granite formations that tower thousands of feet over an emerald valley in Yosemite. Wrap your imagination around ancient redwoods some 2,500 years old, too big to wrap your arms around, in Sequoia National Park. Then thank John Muir, a writer, naturalist, environmentalist and dreamer for his far-reaching vision.

The explanations of how the Buffalo Soldiers earned their nickname vary. Some say it was because the soldiers’ curly black hair resembled the hair of a buffalo. Others attribute it to the similarities between the bravery and fighting style of the animals and the men. It could simply be because this African American regiment wore thick coats made from buffalo hide during winter by necessity in their charge to protect settlers moving out West. Learn the facts during a fascinating visit to their former army base, the Presidio.
