WONDERLAND: YELLOWSTONE IN WINTER

2017 JOURNEY AT-A-GLANCE

In wintertime, Yellowstone is alluring, its geologic features even more spectacular. Exploring America’s first national park in winter via a special vehicle on this Culturious trip is almost an otherworldly experience... Watch bison, elk, wolves and bighorn sheep wander across snow-covered valleys. See steaming pools contrast with the frozen wastes that surround them, and waterfalls partially freeze into ice bridges. Ride a horse-drawn sleigh through the snowy expanse of the National Elk Refuge. But there’s warmth to be found in this frozen world, too – geysers like Old Faithful erupt into the frigid air, billowing steam and spume that paint white masks on the faces of bison; and a dip in Chico Hot Springs will keep you toasty for a spell.

Yellowstone’s most famous feature, Old Faithful Geyser, is just as reliable in winter as in summer, erupting about every 90 minutes. But because it’s shooting 4,000 to 8,000 gallons of boiling water into the cold winter air, the geyser’s effect is even more thrilling. And because you’re staying inside the park right next to Old Faithful when Yellowstone is devoid of daily summer crowds, you’ll have this phenomenon mostly to yourself!

Because Yellowstone National Park is covered with snow during much of the winter, all but a few of the park’s roads are closed to auto travel between November and April. So your guided treks into the interior to experience Yellowstone’s frozen landscapes are accomplished by special over-the-snow tracked vehicles that take you into the heart of the park for radically different views than you’ll get in the warmer months.
