PRODUCT UPDATE Safety 5M collapsible laser barriers
Laser Components is working with Kentek to provide a range of portable laser safety barriers. New to this line are the 5M collapsible barriers, available in either Flex-Guard Regular Power or Flex-Guard Plus Power, for laser protection rated at 100W/ cm2
and 250W/cm2 respectively for 100s.
The barrier is composed of just five major parts, and can be assembled in less than five minutes. For higher power applications there is the Ever-Guard free standing barrier, rated at 1,200W/cm2
for 100s. Constructed from
patterned aluminium, these panels use a special coating to help block, absorb and diffuse scattered and direct laser radiation. Ever-Guard panels are available with the option of an interlocked door and acrylic, laser safe viewing windows. The free standing barrier range is
constructed of welded steel frames with pivoting, glow in the dark cross braces, and can be used alone or to create a temporary partition wall when joined together with light blocking hinges constructed of the same material as the laser barrier.

Gray B0.5-SC
Greenteg has further miniaturised its laser power sensing technology for OEM applications. The Gray B0.5-SC measures up to 500mW on a surface of only 2x2mm. The detector is available as a bare die component or mounted on a PCB for easy OEM system integration. With its small dimensions, the detector is especially suited for measurements inside the laser source. Gray B0.5-SC detectors have no angle dependence (± 30°) and measure in a spectral range from 190nm to 15μm. The detector can be reflow soldered like an SMD component, allowing straightforward mechanical and
VCSEL-based proximity sensors
Princeton Optronics has announced the start of high volume mass production of single emitters and small arrays for optical proximity sensors. Because of their small form factor, high directionality and better electrical-optical conversion efficiency, the VCSEL-based proximity sensors are a suitable choice as a replacement for an IR-LED in any active optical sensor. VCSELs enable smaller, more cost-effective packages with lower power consumption, as well as longer ranges due to narrower native divergence, allowing for design into conventional proximity sensing as well as for mobile applications.
Positioning equipment Single-mode fibre couplers
A new opto-mechanical tool for coupling light into single-mode fibre optics from Siskiyou offers a unique combination of high precision adjustment in a very compact package. Specifically, Siskiyou single-mode fibre
couplers incorporate optics for focusing laser light into a FC connectorised single-mode fibre optic, together with tip/tilt mechanical

electrical system integration. At higher volumes, the B0.5-SC is among the most cost effective detectors. The Gray B0.5-SC complements Greenteg’s product portfolio of housed, mounted, and bare-die laser power detectors. Greenteg’s detectors are based on the thermopile technology. A patented process enables the production of detectors with a thickness of 0.6mm. This enables easy integration in confined environments, and a fast rise time of less than a second leading to an improved control of laser processes and reduced costs.

Sensors and detectors 3A-PF-12
Ophir Photonics Group has released the 3A-PF-12 thermal power/energy laser measurement sensor for short pulsed lasers. Part of the 3A-P family of laser sensors that measure power up to 3W, the 3A-PF-12 is an ultra-sensitive sensor that can measure powers from as low as 15µW up to 3W and energies from as low as 20µJ to 2J. The new sensor replaces the P type absorber with the high damage threshold PF type, giving it a
very high energy density damage threshold for repetitive pulses. Designed for use with YAG and its
harmonics and excimer lasers, the 3A- PF-12 is a thermal power/energy sensor with low noise of 4µW and low drift of 5-30µW. It delivers high energy density damage threshold, up to 1.5J/ cm2
for repetitive nanosecond pulses. The sensor features a 12mm aperture and broad wavelength range of 0.15–20µm.

Recent technology developments, and demonstrations of 63 per cent of wall plug efficiency and operation at high temperatures, have enabled Princeton Optronics VCSELs to demonstrate effectiveness for many proximity and high volume applications. Single emitters can reach output powers from milliwatts to several watts in continuous mode, and order of magnitude more in pulsed mode, while maintaining industry leading efficiencies. Single emitters and arrays are offered in die sizes from 190 x 190µm up to 500 x 500µm and are offered at 850nm and at 940nm.

adjustment to permit accurate positioning of the focused beam with respect to the fibre end. The use of ultra-high resolution, differential adjusters (2.75 arc-second movement per 5° adjuster rotation), together with a mechanical design that decouples tip/tilt adjustment from focus, delivers the precision necessary to achieve optimum coupling efficiency into single-mode fibres in a very small volume.
Alternately, the system can be used in reverse for high precision collimation of single-mode fibre output.
Siskiyou single-mode fibre optic couplers will be useful for researchers and instrument builders who wish to couple laser output into single-mode fibers, or to produce small focused spots and collimated beams in a small space.
