What will life be like in 100 years? Will the term photonics be as widely known as electronics is today? The Optical Society (OSA) is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and on page 14 Dr Gregory Quarles, chief scientist at OSA, gives his predictions on what the next 100 years holds for photonics. One aspect he points to is the need for faster internet and better fibre optic communication, which will ultimately underpin advances in other areas – as more devices gain sensing capabilities in the Internet of Things, greater internet bandwidth will be needed to handle the volumes of data. Dr Quarles drew attention to a rise in optics and photonics in wearable technology and biomedicine in the future, both of which are covered in this issue. Rachel Berkowitz, on page 20, looks at the various wearable technologies under development, including smart glasses and contact lenses, and sensors woven into textiles. On page 32, Jessica Rowbury investigates projects building photonic equipment to diagnose sepsis, one of the biggest killers in the developed world. A lot of this kind of technology will be discussed at the annual US photonics extravaganza, Photonics West, which takes place from 13 to 18 February in San Francisco. This issue contains a preview of the show on page 24. Electro Optics will have a booth (2704) at the trade fair, so if you’ll be attending, please feel free to visit.
