EOS NEWS T
he European Optical Society (EOS) will return to Berlin 26-30 September 2016, coinciding with EOS’ 25th anniversary. Germany, with a long tradition in optics
and photonics, and Berlin, with its many research institutes and companies, serves as an ideal place for the EOS biennial meeting. We are very happy once again to enjoy the excellent conference facilities of the Germany’s leading Science and Technology Park Berlin-Adlershof. A variety of meetings are to be held at the
event: Silicon Photonics and Guided-Wave Optics; Freeform Optics; Optical System Design and Tolerancing; Diffractive Optics; Trends in Resonant Nanophotonics; Frontiers in Optical Metrology; Organic and Hybrid Semiconductor Materials and Devices; and Adaptive Optics and Advanced Illumination Imaging. The meeting on Freeform Optics is a new addition to the topics at EOSAM, chaired by Kristina Uhlendorf, Sypro Optics (Germany) and Wilbert Ijzerman, Philips Lighting (The Netherlands). The conference is locally chaired by Dr Rainer

Schuhmann from Berliner Glas. As in 2014, the conference week begins with tutorials for students on Monday. These tutorials cover aspects of the topical meetings during the week. On Tuesday morning, we have the privilege of listening to a keynote speech from Dr Eric Betzig, one of the Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry in 2014 for ‘the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy’. Dr Betzig currently works as a group leader at the Janelia Research Campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, developing novel optical imaging tools in an effort to open new windows into molecular, cellular, and neurobiology. The industrial exhibition will take place on the
Wednesday and Thursday (28 and 29 September). In 2014, nearly 20 companies were represented at the trade fair, and this year the exhibition is expected to grow further. The companies have access to the scientific conference programme and have a great opportunity to expand their business network. For exhibition space, contact

In addition, the special session on Grand Challenges of Photonics will be organised for the fifth time. In this session, world-class speakers will talk about technologies that are revolutionary, uncommon and not realisable to date, but can pave the way for an even brighter future in optics and photonics. Partners in EU projects are invited to present their results in a special project dissemination session. EOSAM also includes the EOS annual general assembly, the EOS fellows ceremony and various award ceremonies during the week. Among others, EOS will celebrate young professionals by presenting the EOS early career awards for women and entrepreneurs. Best student oral and poster presentations will also be awarded. l
