SHOW SPIE PHOTONICS WEST

Lighting the way stateside

A preview of some of the photonics technology that will be on display at Photonics West in San Francisco when the show opens its doors from 13 to 18 February

corrector measurement system. The device is optimised for fast, accurate and repeatable inline measurements of LED bulbs.

Acton Optics and Coatings will feature new UV-enhanced silver coatings at the show. The coatings have UV reflectivity and high broadband VIS-MIR reflectance. The company provides high performing optical components and optical sub-assemblies for a diverse array of industries, including medical, semiconductor, materials processing, analytic instrumentation, aerospace and defence markets. Products on show will include UV beam-turning mirrors, VUV/ UV optical filters and AlMgF2 high reflectance coatings. www.actonoptics.com

Admesy will display its Cronus Bhaskar, a cross-over between an integrating sphere and cosine

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME

SPIE Photonics West and BiOS, the biomedical optics and photonics conference, will take place from 13-18 February in San Francisco. Along with the equipment displayed on the exhibition floor, the conference sessions will cover the full range of photonics technologies over three tracks: BiOS; Lase, focusing on industrial laser technology; and Opto, the optoelectronics and photonics conference.

The Opto plenary session on 15

February has presentations from Xiang Zhang at the University of California, Berkeley on ‘Parity-time symmetry photonics’, Robert Boyd at the Universities of Ottawa and Rochester on quantum nonlinear optics, and Michael Liehr at Suny Polytechnic Institute on ‘Merging photonics with nanoelectronics’. On 17 February the Lase plenary session will have talks from Philip Russell at the Max-Planck Institute for the Science of Light on photonic crystal

24 ELECTRO OPTICS l FEBRUARY 2016

fibres; Satoshi Kawata at Osaka University and Riken on ‘Optical 3D nano-fabrication’; and Scott Keeney at NLight Corporation on ‘High power semiconductor lasers’. In addition, there will be sessions on translational research, green photonics, and 3D printing. Photonics West will also include discussion panels on 3D printing, financing photonics businesses, silicon photonics, executive perspectives on the photonics

industry, and a panel discussion on getting hired. The conference will also have a job fair with more than 30 recruiters including Apple, Daylight Solutions, Lumentum, Microsoft, Newport and Thorlabs. There will also be workshops on modelling camera performance, ITAR restrictions, filing patents, conflict minerals, marketing, laser material processing, and silicon photonics. http://spie.org/conferences-and- exhibitions/photonics-west

The bottom part of the Bhaskar is designed to cover the light bulb, acting like an integrator. The system offers accurate and repeatable measurements in terms of colour, (relative) light output and optional flicker, and start-up behaviour within a couple of milliseconds. By

referring to a reference light bulb measured in an integrating sphere, the measurements of the Bhaskar are matched with the lab measurement, offering traceable lab-accurate, inter- device comparable measurements of colour, CRI, spectral power distribution and general appearance. www.admesy.nl

Andon Electronics, a provider of precision sockets used in the testing and board-level assembly of image sensors, optoelectronic and gas sensors, will exhibit at the show. Camera and laser OEMs and their contract manufacturers solder Andon sockets – not the sensor – onto the PCB, to avoid device damage from exposure to high temperature solder, ESD, and cleaning solutions, as well as holding up PCB assembly until the devices arrive. These companies rely on Andon’s Senstac sensor socket contact designed for high shock and vibration 25-year life requirements. Standard and custom sockets are available for a variety of package outlines including PGAs, BGAs, CLCCs, PLCCs, TOs, DIPs, SIPs, LEDs, and more. www.andonelect.com

Avantes will be displaying the AvaSpec-NIR512-2.5-HSC spectrometer, a 512 pixel, thermo- electrically cooled fibre optic

spectrometer covering the range from 1,000-2500nm. The company will also be showcasing its AvaSpec- ULS2048L-USB2-EVO model, a USB3 and Gigabit Ethernet enabled fibre spectrometer. The Evo offers fast data transfer (1.1ms/scan) and on-board memory capacity for up to 50,000 spectra.

Avantes provides spectrometers, light sources, and fibre optics in the 190-2,500nm spectrum range. The company has 20 years of experience in fibre optic spectroscopy. www.avantes.com

Crystran, a manufacturer of windows, lenses, prisms and specialist optics will be exhibiting its products, used in a wide variety of ultraviolet, visible and infrared optical systems.
