UK Unilever has put its climate transition action plan to its shareholders for a vote, marking a monumental move in the fight against climate change.
The plan will set out the REN owner’s climate strategy going forward in an effort to reduce carbon emissions across its operations. The vote is the first instance that a major conglomerate has put its climate action plan to shareholders. “Climate change is the most pressing issue of our time and we are determined to play a leadership role in accelerating the transition to a zero carbon economy,” said Unilever’s CEO, Alan Jope. “That’s why we will be sharing more details with our shareholders who are increasingly wanting to understand more about our strategy and plans.” Unilever will share the new plan following shareholder approval ahead of its AGM in May.

capital to complete the takeover, leaving it with the biggest share of the group. Arcadia’s sale – minus fashion label Evans, which was purchased by Australia’s City Chic Collective in December – has also drawn interest from tycoon and Frasers Group owner Mike Ashley. Ashley offered Arcadia a £50m loan last month, which the group rebuffed.
Ashley, the founder of Sports Direct, is a long-time pursuer of Debenhams, which failed to secure an anticipated last-minute rescue deal from JD Sports, resulting in its collapse on the same day as Arcadia. US retail owner Authentic Brands has also been cited as plotting a double takeover of Debenhams and Arcadia, according to sources at The Telegraph.
