THE ECO ANGLE


One of the main benefits of wood is that, as an engineering material, it is inherently sustainable. As Quadpack’s Stircea notes, “the manufacturing process does not consume much energy or water” and because wood is “solid but light” it keeps the transportation footprint low. Moreover, timber is recyclable.


Further sustainable credentials can be garnered via sourcing and usage. For example, all of the

It also implemented a biomass plant last year whereby all wood scrap is used to generate energy for its factory’s dryers, heating and air conditioning, eliminating the need for fossil fuels. And the design of wood packaging parts can transform this naturally environmentally-friendly material into a true green superstar. Spanish luxury packaging company Pujolasos recently developed a trio of cap options elevating the eco potential of wood as a packaging material. First to market in November 2019 was Woork, an organic and compostable wooden cap which replaces the standard plastic interior with organic cork and dispenses with the need for glue. Since its launch, the concept has been picked up by several brands including Loewe Perfumes, which deployed the technology for its recently-launched wooden Fragrance To Go case. More recently, Pujolasos introduced Woon, a monomaterial wooden cap with the thread carved directly into the wood, again dispensing with the need for a plastic inner and Woodle, the first wooden cap with a removable plastic insert for easy separation and disposal at end of life. Indeed, monomaterial wood caps are a popular launch theme, with droppers specialist Virospack claiming to be the first company to achieve a
