COLLETT CONTROVERSIAL
I saw this, and thought of you!
Angler, shooter, industry stalwart and general controversialist, Steve Collett, talks about the second hand market, and what it means to manufacturers and retailers around the country.
I
’m always buying tat. Whether its golf bats, air guns, fishing tackle, watches, I’m always spending money on stuff I don’t need. Pretty much like most blokes really.
The other day I was talking to the publisher of this esteemed magazine. He’d been shooting with his mate who happened to be using an old Weihrauch springer. It was a great gun. I know this, as I used to have one! And this brings me to the point… I’d sold it to a friend. But just the memory of using it made me want one again, so I rang the guy I sold it to…
“Hello mate, have you still got
that Weihrauch I sold you?” “No mate, I used it for a few months and sold it to a mate.” Doh!
“Is he using it still? I’d love to buy it back,” I said.

“Oh look here’s another one… suppose those eyes just broke yesterday did they?”
“Feckin’ell Steve you’ve had three months to bring this into me and you choose the week before the season ends…”
“Let me guess, just broke swinging in a 3oz roach did they?”
I chose the former… eBay! I typed in the model of the rod and really, to no one’s surprise at all, I found multiple vendors selling me the rod… and as they were second hand they were peanuts. I ordered a rod… safe in the knowledge that I’d even get a spare butt section! Now there’s nothing wrong with the second hand market. It’s been keeping scumbags in Mercedes AMGs for years as they break into your shed and sell your hard earned goods… but surely, as a
