ACTRESSES PLAY THEIR PART By John Fox

he Fox family’s Blackwood herd has been celebrating the success of their Actress family, with three LP awards, Blackwood Actress LP150 and her two granddaughters, Blackwood Actress 5 LP100 and Blackwood Actress 6 LP100. The Actress family began at Blackwood with the purchase of a heifer calf, Roevalley Broker Actress from Robert Martin at a collective dairy sale at Lancaster. She was a descendant of the Actress family from the Sutherland’s Highland herd.


She calved down as a tall deep bodied heifer and bred a heifer calf by Parker Aero Wade


named Blackwood Actress. Scored VG87 as a heifer she went on to classify Excellent on nine occasions scoring 94pts in her sixth lactation. She completed 150 tons last year in her 12th lactation averaging 27.7kg/day since calving as a heifer 15 years ago. Two of her granddaughters, Blackwood Actress 5 (2E) and Blackwood Actress 6 (5E) both completed 100 tonnes in their last lactation.


She also has a daughter Blackwood Actress 7 (5E) which has given 88 tons to date in eight lactations and a granddaughter Blackwood Actress 10 (2E) which has given


82 tons to date in six lactations. She is presently survived by 30 members of the Actress family in the Blackwood herd out of a total of 42 descendants registered, a remarkable testimony to the longevity of both the cow and her offspring. Having won the champion family group in both Lancashire NMR and Lancashire Holstein club herd competitions it has been a pleasure to see the Actress family develop in the last decade, certainly one of the rewards of working with pedigree animals and the facilities offered by Holstein UK.


TARSHAW CONVINCER KATHLEEN EX94-5E LP100 By John Howie


Tarshaw Convincer Kathleen EX94-5E, has produced 100 tons in seven lactations at 4.26% fat and 3.33% protein. Convincer Kathleen’s dam Tarshaw Zoro Kathleen EX91- 2E completed 65 tons at 4.26% fat and 3.33% protein, with the family originating from a milking heifer bought at Paisley Market in 1988 for 620gns, Dalserf Kathleen 67.
