Richard Beard takes a closer look at the top 20 star brood cows

he top 20 cows are all by different sires and represent 19 prefixes in 18 ownerships. Exactly half are UK bred, mainly from homebred dams, while the fourth ranked cow is an imported embryo from Pinehurst in Wisconsin and descends from the extraordinary Audrey Posch line which has just produced the first cow with 18 direct generations of EX dams in the USA.

The eight Canadian imports comprise of five from Ontario, two from Quebec and one from Alberta. Most amazingly number five was bred at Staffordshire Farms, New York, which managed to beat the UK’s embargo on US Holsteins by entering via France. Not surprisingly the most famous cow family in the world is in pole position, the Roxys, with Bond Haven Dixie Rox

being a daughter of Canada’s first 30 star brood cow Mil R Mor Roxette, in turn a daughter of the twice Queen of the Breed, Glenridge Citation Roxy EX97, head of five generations of EX cows all with 10 or more EX daughters.

Dixie Rox was purchased in the 1989 Hanoverhill dispersal by Alan Swale for his Joylan herd. Her Blackstar daughter notched up 39 stars in the Relough herd and the pair are the only dam and daughter to feature in the top 20. Joylan Blackstar Roxie is one of three cows that have flourished in Northern Ireland at Ardmore, Inch and Relough, while the Joylans’ other homebred entry, Trudy 6, has prospered in the Cushwash herd in the Irish Republic.

Besides Joylan, only one other owner has two cows

listed, Tom Cope of Huddlesford with a show winning pair of imports, Betsy and Kitty, the latter being the top classified cow at EX95.

British Friesians are represented by the 42 star matron, Stardale Black Vaakje 3, whose only Holstein genes come from Ullswater Royal Sovereign.

The Red and Whites have two ambassadors, Coldsprings Royal A VG88 who is ranked seventh having achieved 50 stars in the Butlersarms herd and out of Thistleridge Alice Vale. While 15th on the list is Horizon Jub Helene EX94, a daughter of Ja-Bob Enhancer Helen Red from the same family that produced Horizon Ranger Red and Ja-bob J ordan Red, as well as the remarkable Chief Mark daughter, Heavenly Joy.

Bond Haven Dixie Rox EX93 is number one star brood cow in the UK with 66 stars.

Staffordshire Miss America EX90 has 53 stars and is ranked fifth.

Condon Aero Sharon EX91 has accumulated 64 stars to take her to number two.

Topmark Raider Rhapsody EX92 has gained 55 stars to be ranked fourth.
