06 NEWS HOLSTEIN BREEDER HEADS UP NFU DAIRY BOARD

A West Midlands Holstein breeder has been elected as the new chairman of the NFU national dairy board. Tenant farmer Michael Oakes, who runs a closed herd of 180 pedigree Holsteins at Rednal, Birmingham, succeeds Rob Harrison.

“I’d like to thank Rob for his tireless work in what has been

an extremely testing period for the dairy industry over the past two years,” said Mr Oakes. “We all know the prospects in the short-term for the sector are not good and many dairy farmers are at the end of their tether as they continue to experience low prices. I’m sure it won't be an easy ride for any of us – we, therefore,

need to pull together as a national board with clear aims and objectives ensuring NFU members know that they are not on their own. We need to build newer, stronger relationships throughout the supply chain in order to create economic stability.

AWARD FOR SUE COPE

Congratulations to Sue Cope, managing director of CIS who was awarded a Fellowship of Royal Agricultural Societies for recognition of distinguished achievement in the agricultural industry. The award was presented by the Countess of Wessex on Wednesday 10th February in London.

Holstein UK’s classifier Iwan Thomas was among the line up of speakers at TotalDairy Expo held at The Shepherd’s Inn, Carlisle, on Friday 11th March ahead of UK Dairy Expo.

TotalDairy Expo offered practical tips on dairy herd management including: selective dry cow therapy, avoiding over trimming cows’ feet and carefully weighing up the benefits of pushing for milk constituents.

Some of the UK’s leading dairy experts took to the stage to offer farmers and advisors practical advice on issues related to nutrition, mastitis, lameness, fertility and breeding.

Iwan highlighted the need to correctively mate females and select bulls based on a farm’s individual breeding aims, rather than just choosing a bull because he was top of the rankings.
