Another successful animal sold is Ernevale Destry Lulu Red which made 2400gns selling to Steven Robinson, she went on to be junior champion at the Irish National Holstein Show 2015 and red and white champion at the same event in 2016.
Other Rosina family members that have had success for the herd include: Ernevale Astre Rosina EX93-3E descends from B Rosina, she stood first dry cow at the Royal Ulster Winter Fair and Ernevale FS Rosina EX93 stood first junior cow at the Royal Ulster Winter Fair 2007. A double stroke of luck led to the retention of what Seamus believes is one of the best females in the herd currently, the VG88 scored heifer
Ernevale Destry Triuna. “I am lucky to have her as, firstly, her EX91 dam was almost sold as she wasn’t producing any heifers. I tried to sell her at a Club sale, however, I felt she was worth more, so I brought her home.”
“Then, in 2013, Destry Triuna was entered in my production sale and I turned her out as she had not reached her reserve price. So, after twice almost not having her in the herd she is already achieving highly and has produced a lovely Superstyle heifer calf.” Meanwhile, the Mydeal family has two VG two year olds in the herd, Shottle Mydeal VG87 and Destry Mydeal VG85. They are both daughters of Ernevale Sept Mydeal EX92 who was champion at Armagh and Fermanagh County Shows.
And Seamus is as strict on sire selection as he is when looking at bringing in new female families. “When selecting sires I look for bulls with +10 for conformation, feet and legs, udders and overall type, they also have to be positive for butterfat and protein and +400 for milk.
“I do make an exception, when I see progeny of a bull that are pleasing then I might relax a little. I aim to mate cows individually, matching each cow to a bull that will improve her weaknesses.”
Current service sires include Megawatt, Soloman, Montaray, Lexar, High Octane, Superstyle, Golden Dreams and Silver. Baby calves are sired by Mardi Gras, Deman, Brokaw, Superstyle, Cancoon, Curvale Destined, Doorman, Seaver,
Ernevale Destry Triuna scored VG88 two year old at the last classification visit and stood second intermediate heifer at the Royal Ulster Winter Fair 2015.
