he Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and ITN Productions have launched a news and current affairs-style programme ‘Engineering the Next Generation,’ which explores the challenges, careers and future of modern engineering in the UK. ‘Engineering the Next Generation’ is an online programme which can be viewed via the IET’s website. With the government announcing the £229 million of industrial strategy investment, ‘Engineering the Next Generation’ brings to life the opportunities and challenges the sector faces in the UK, exploring the changes in policy and long-term impact on the UK economy. The programme showcases the work being done to attract future generations to engineering, and the diverse range of jobs available in this sector, many which are unknown to career seekers.


In addition, it looks at how work experience and apprenticeships play a vital role in attracting the younger generation into a rewarding and life- long career in engineering. Drawing on ITN’s 60 year heritage and expertise in storytelling, the news-style piece combines key interviews with individuals including Alison Carr, director of governance and policy at the IET, and Great British Bake Off star Andrew Smyth.


The programme also includes stories from leading organisations such as Bosch UK, EPSRC, G-Research, Johnson & Johnson Medical, National Composites Centre, NM group, Reaction Engine, Thales, TTP and the University of Strathclyde. The programme will form part of an

extensive communications campaign featuring industry partners, as well as relevant journalists, writers and bloggers.


Ms Carr commented: “Our new online programme ‘Engineering the Next Generation’ addresses the current, most important challenges we are facing in the engineering and technology industry, as well as showcasing the huge range of exciting and rewarding opportunities engineering presents.


“Engineers are creators, inventors and innovators and we hope this programme inspires the next generation of talent, who will play a vital role in shaping our future.” Simon Shelley, head of industry news at ITN Productions, added: “ITN Productions is delighted to have partnered with the Institution of Engineering and Technology to explore the future of engineering, what is being done to attract young people into engineering and the extensive range of careers available in modern engineering.”

Bitzer UK has announced its latest training programme, with courses on key compressor technology topics scheduled for the rest of this year and into 2018.


The day-long training sessions, taking place at the company’s Milton Keynes headquarters, cover reciprocating compressor technology, screw technology, inverter systems and an overview of the full Bitzer range.


The courses are free and include refreshments and lunch, with


allocated parking available for all delegates. Heading up the programme is Marcus Levy, Bitzer UK’s head of


technical training and business development. He commented: “While the principles of refrigeration don’t change, the technology itself is subject to constant development and innovation. To get the best out of today’s high performance systems and ensure they perform at maximum efficiency, it is important to understand how they operate and how to commission and service plant correctly.”


Mr Levy added: “The courses cover the principles of operation, with hands-on experience for those at the sharp end of installation and servicing. They are also useful as introductions or technology refreshers for system designers and interested end-users.”
