Hitachi heats and cools one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions

I

n early 2010 the owners of the Waterford Crystal, Wedgwood and Royal Doulton brands, signed an agreement with Waterford City Council to open a brand new Waterford Crystal manufacturing facility and retail outlet in the very heart of Waterford, Ireland, celebrating over 225 years of the company’s history.

Arup’s in Cork were the consultants on the project, in association with the mechanical engineers, Spectron Engineering of Waterford and installers, Sirus Aircon of Cork. Sirus Aircon opted for a combination of Hitachi’s IVX and VRF systems to meet the fundamental requirements of the site – high-performance, cost-effective heating and cooling, quick and efficient installation, energy-saving operation and a long life-cycle. Hitachi’s Set Free VRF and Utopia IVX systems were connected to a Siemens Building

Management System (BMS) at the showrooms. The standard control features on Hitachi’s units allow for easy integration with all of the leading BMS systems on the market. This is possible because of Hitachi’s unique System Free concept across its commercial ranges: using the same indoor units in its Set Free VRF, Utopia IVX and ES product lines. All of these indoor units have volt free inputs and outputs as standard too, so no further interfaces are needed in order to connect to a BMS system.

Managing Hitachi air conditioning is a breeze, with the independent control of each unit enabling a more comfortable environment, tailored to the temperature requirements of different areas in the building. This is more cost effective as units not requiring operation will stop, reducing energy wastage. The COP and EER of the systems

demonstrate the leading energy efficient capabilities, with the new Utopia IVX, for example, having a market-leading COP of 5.16 and EER of 4.68.

The longer pipe length and compact design of the systems allowed for a quicker and more flexible installation too, keeping disruption to a minimum, while the IVX incorporates a horizontal discharge twin fan design to enable a more efficient use of floor space. Paul McGettigan, Johnson Controls - Hitachi sales manager for Ireland, said: “We’re delighted to be associated with this project. Waterford Crystal dates back to 1783 and is synonymous throughout the world with the best of Ireland. Since it’s opening in June 2010, over 800,000 people have visited and, thanks to Hitachi equipment and its installer partners Sirus Aircon, visitors are assured of total comfort during their visit.”
