Environmental Initiative T

Beyond Refrigeration The Institute of Refrigeration (IOR)

he purpose of the IOR's Beyond Refrigeration initiative has been to develop guidance and point

to tools or training that will address the environmental challenges for our sector. It is aimed at helping users of refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment - to work back from what net zero in 2050 would look like. To develop the template, guidance and tools, the IOR interviewed experts from retailers, manufacturers, designers, installers and training.

Starting with the question from one of our members "What should we be doing about climate change?" the initiative developed a template that identifies seven critical areas: Q Reducing the need for mechanical heat- ing and cooling

Q Achieving best result performance Q Balancing heating and cooling Q Making use of best available technology Q Use energy intelligently Q Developing the best people and skills Q What Else? Whole System Sustainability and more

The initiative helps users to evaluate where they are now and guides them through the ambitious steps they need to take to achieve net zero. Through a website (www.ior. org.uk/beyondrefrigeration), annual conferences and a series of on line talks, it points to case studies of success, benchmarking tools, good practice guides and policy recommendations - much of this already available from other

sources. Beyond Refrigeration brings this together into one evolving online space to support our industry on this journey. IOR chief executive Miriam Rodway comments “The IOR’s remit is to promote the advancement of cooling technology for the public benefit – addressing environmental issues are critical. The Beyond Refrigeration template sets ambitious targets and shows that we believe that the net zero aspiration is possible for our sector - if we work together. "In developing the Template and the

draft Policy Briefs we invite everyone– the entire range of users as well as specialists – to consider how they will engage in the journey to achieve net zero for our sector.”
