New Copeland scroll compressors for low GWP A2L refrigerants

A

2L refrigerants have long been recognised in the commercial refrigeration sector as potentially viable alternatives to HFC refrigerants. With GWPs below 300, and in some cases below 150, some A2L refrigerants are among the low GWP options available today that enable F-Gas Compliance. Emerson invested early in the development of sustainable solutions with A2L refrigerants for the refrigeration industry. With the latest Copeland scroll compressors for A2L refrigerants, Emerson is supporting OEMs with a long-term, reliable alternative to reduce the global warming potential of their medium and low temperature refrigeration systems. Emerson was the first manufacturer to

introduce A2L qualification for its refrigeration portfolio back in 2018. Following the successful launch of the medium temperature scroll compressors qualified for A2L refrigerants (YB* range) in 2020, Emerson is now launching new standard and digital scroll compressors for low temperature refrigeration applications with A2L refrigerants. Copeland YF* scroll compressors are optimized for low temperatures between -40°C and +7°C and their operation is approved for a variety of medium pressure A2L HFO-blends such as R454A (GWP 239), R454C (GWP 148), and R455A (GWP 148).

YB* and YF* scroll compressors were enhanced internally and externally for F-Gas compliant A2L refrigerants, to create the most reliable compressors with refrigerants with a high HFO content: they feature IP54 protection, benefit from brazed connections and can be used in PED cat. II and cat I applications. Their new scroll design provides the most hermetic design ever, avoiding leakages, minimizing maintenance and risk of failure. Thanks to these improvements and to the better COP of A2L refrigerants, customers can reduce their power consumption and system downtime.

Copeland scroll YB*, YF* and YFJ* compressors These ranges can also be used with A1 refrigerants R448A/R449A, R407A/F and R404A, making them an excellent solution for multi-refrigerant applications with A1 or A2L refrigerants. “It was important for us to offer a refrigeration scroll portfolio with flexible refrigerant selection” explains Hakan Ildiri, Market Manager Refrigeration at Emerson Commercial & Residential Solutions. “One of the missions of Emerson’s A2L qualification program is to help refrigeration system designers leverage their synthetic refrigerants’ expertise (HFCs) to design next generation refrigeration systems with low GWP refrigerants: the architectural aspects and refrigerant dynamics of A2L systems is similar as with today’s commonly used HFC refrigerants, and this eases the switch.” The new YF* range includes models with vapour injection (YFI) and digital modulation (YFJ). Digital capacity modulation is an economical and reliable alternative to capacity modulation with an inverter drive. Vapour injection boosts the system cooling capacity by up to 40% and the efficiency by up to 25%, making this compressor range the most efficient on the market for low temperature applications. Thanks to Copeland injection technology, these scroll compressors deliver a high COP at rating point. A2L systems with Copeland scroll compressors have been successfully deployed by retailers such as ASDA. They contribute to a significant reduction of the overall refrigerant charge

and carbon footprint. They also provide a cost-effective alternative to CO2

systems with

refrigeration units below 15 kW used in food service applications. The YB and YF compressors are perfect for the following applications: Q Food retail: ideal for both direct and indirect expansion systems such as multi-compressor packs in semi-centralized architectures or con- densing units in decentralized architectures

Q Food service: condensing units for cold rooms, remote condensing units, as well as mono/bi- block systems

Q Light industry: process chillers/blast freezers, other direct-expansion applications, or process cooling systems.

Combined with Emerson’s controllers, pressure switches, expansion valves and oil regulators, Copeland YB* and YF* scroll compressors are also available as A2L-ready solutions: for single or multi-compressor applications. These solutions enable manufacturers to reduce the time to market for their systems.
