R470A from Refrigerant Solutions is a new non-flammable drop-in retrofit replacement for R410A with a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) less than half that of R410A. R470A has a similar thermodynamic performance with matching energy efficiency and cooling capacity as R410A. It is suitable to be used to replace R410A in existing equipment,


being compatible with materials commonly found in these installations. It contains components that are known to have excellent chemical stability in air-conditioning equipment and have well- established low toxicities. R470 is an exciting new development in the quest to replace higher GWP refrigerants particularly, although not restricted to, existing equipment. It enables users to replace R410A with minimal changes and inconvenience at low cost and is compatible with lubricants typically used with R410A so that there is no need to change the existing lubricant in the system when retrofitting.


R470A is an excellent option to replace R410A, especially in the European Union where F-Gas regulations are creating shortages, but also in other countries which are also introducing restrictions on the sale and use of refrigerants containing hydrofluorocarbons.

Toshiba


Toshiba has developed an online tool that automatically checks R32 refrigerant- based air conditioning designs for compliance with the safety requirements of European Standard EN 378. EN 378 – Refrigerating Systems and heat pumps: Safety and environmental requirements sets out limits for refrigerant charge size in occupied spaces. These vary according to the toxicity and flammability of the refrigerant, the size of the occupied space, the accessibility of the area and the scale of possible exposure by individuals and the public in the unlikely event of a refrigerant leak. “The calculation for specific projects under EN378 becomes quite complex, due to the number of variables involved,” said Oliver Sanders, TCUK’s new equipment pre-sales manager. “The tool enables designers to quickly input the key details for a project and simply hit return; it automatically calculates whether the proposed system is compliant or not.”


If a proposed design proves to be non-compliant, the tool suggests practical mitigation measures that can be used to ensure the project meets the requirements.
