esco has reported a 0.3% rise in like-for-like sales for the 13 weeks to 28 May this year – its second consecutive quarter of growth. For the first quarter of 2016- 17 group like-for-like sales grew by 0.9%, while international sales were up by 3.0%.
The retailer has recently sold the Dobbies Garden Centres, Giraffe restaurants and Harris+Hoole coffee shops chains.
Chief executive Dave Lewis said: “We have delivered a second quarter of positive like-for-like sales growth across all parts of the Group in what remains a challenging market with sustained deflation.”

Sainsbury’s has reported a 0.3% increase in total retail sales (excluding fuel) in its first quarter trading statement for the 12 weeks to 4 June.
However, like-for-like retail sales were down by 0.8% (excluding fuel). Ocado saw its pre-tax profits increase to £8.5m, up from £7.2m for the same period a year earlier, according to its half year results for the 24 weeks ending 15 May this year. Gross sales rose by 13.9% to £582.9m.
Chief executive officer Tim Steiner said: “I am encouraged by the steady progress in our business, with volumes through our operations, including the throughput for Morrisons, growing by 30%. The market remains competitive with ongoing price deflation but our increasing scale and operational efficiencies meant that we still grew profits, albeit at a slower rate.” “We have been gaining share in the online grocery market and expect this to continue,” he added.
