REFRIGERANTS

While current standards and codes provide safe boundaries for the use of flammable refrigerants, most do not yet recognise the 2L category. Accordingly, if 2L refrigerants are to be used in current equipment and environments, they must be treated as if they were category 2. Under the current EN378 the maximum charge for propane in a wall-mounted indoor split air conditioning unit in a 3m2

room is around 0.23kg while that for R32 is around 3.08kg.

While this is still potentially very attractive for 2L fluids in some application sectors, there are other regulations, many of them at a national level, that place more severe limitations on their use. For example, both Italy and France currently prohibit the use of flammable refrigerants of any kind in room air conditioners.

EN378 is currently under revision to incorporate and provide new limits for the 2L classification and is expected later this year. Clearly, although it is being undertaken in the US, in providing greater understanding of 2L refrigerants and their effective applications, this new research work will have implications globally – including EN378. In short, this represents an important opportunity to address both the understanding of 2L product behaviour in common applications and

how this relates to current standards and codes. It is important that where relevant the work is done in conjunction with industry experts such as OEMs and refrigerant manufacturers. This is both to ensure consistency with other

research initiatives — for example, the AHRI runs a number of low GWP evaluation programmes which Mexichem regularly participate in — and to help a smooth ‘real world’ transition in adopting the most suitable refrigerant.
