because it has great resistance to heat flow – and is triple glazed. Another UK manufacturer produces the film that goes on the inside, and it’s that film that prevents the door from misting when you open it.”
F-Gas legislation also has a knock-on effect. “F-Gas doesn’t affect us greatly at this time, but it is affecting our customers as time goes on,” says Mr Nicholls. “We do need to keep our customers informed as we move forward. Some of our clients are big businesses, but don’t have massive engineering sides, so they rely on us to a certain extent to keep them up to date with refrigerant changes.”
One thing that makes Verco stand out is its commitment to staff as well as the local community. “We are very community oriented,” says Mr Fogden. “We have 42 staff with an average service length of around 10 years. Some do leave us – and come back to stay later on.” One such person is Sarah Evans. “I joined Verco as a temp in early 2000 which became a permanent role later that year. What immediately struck me about Verco was how everyone pulled together as a team to achieve the same goal – making quality cabinets and providing good customer service.
“After a few years I left Verco for pastures new but returned in 2014 in a new role as purchasing and quality director. Prior to this my career had primarily been in finance so this was quite a change for me but I looked forward to the challenge and knew that Verco’s directors and staff would be there to support me. I was given the opportunity to attend various seminars and courses to ensure that I was able to manage the quality system and become familiar with the delights of ISO 9001:2015.
“On my return to Verco, what I found interesting was the number of staff still here from when I first started some 14 years before. I think that is what lies at the heart of Verco’s success – it is a family run business that cares for its staff and as such people enjoy working here.” Stores Manager Colin Dolton was born in

At 2035mm high and 900mm deep, the three-model Quebec range consists of a single-door Q1XL with an overall cabinet width of 868mm; a two-door Q2CC – overall cabinet width 1636mm; and a three-door Q3CC – overall cabinet width 2454mm.
Wallingford and has worked for Verco for over 35 years. “My first role was on the factory floor, but shortly after joining the storeman was taken ill and I was asked to run the stores while he was off sick – I’m still doing that 35 years later. “When I first joined Verco, I was involved in volunteering for the Red Cross, both locally and nationally and they were supportive of this. I have also been a member of Wallingford Town Council for over nine years and have had the honour of being elected as The Mayor of Wallingford. Verco were particularly supportive in allowing me to have regular Monday morning meetings with the Town Clerk, and disappear to various meetings and civic events.”
With staff such as Mr Dolton giving long service to the company, Graham Smith is a relative newcomer to the firm with just a couple of years under his belt. “Having joined Verco in April last year as operations manager, I am now supporting Justin and his senior team with customer and operational matters. My immediate observations were of an extremely friendly team of very experienced and caring people.” One only has to visit Verco’s Wallingford premises to see that those observations are right on the money.
The single-door Q1XL features a shelf width of 760mm, a massive 100mm wider than Verco’s Richmond cabinet. “There’s a huge increase in capacity in the Quebec as well as a reduction in energy consumption”, said development director Mike Nicholls. “Not only have we been able to maximise merchandising space within the cabinet, we have significantly reduced the Quebec’s energy consumption by an average of more than 30%.”
Compared to Verco’s equivalent Richmond cabinets, the gross refrigerated volumes of the Quebec models are increased by 27.1% for the Q1XL, 18.4% for the Q2CC; and 17.9% for the Q3CC.
The increase for the single-door Q1XL is significantly larger than the two- and three-door models because it is proportionally wider – the XL designation highlighting the extra width and therefore volume.
All Quebec glass-door freezer cabinets offer an LT1 temperature rating suitable for frozen food products (including ice cream) and are charged as standard with Honeywell’s environmentally-friendly R407f synthetic refrigerant.
