Tell us a little about your mentors? It takes a village for anyone’s career and mentors are a critical piece to that because they add the guidance and safe space to ad- vance your career. Advocates and sponsors are just as important. Often, I looked to my supervisors to take on a mentorship role and even after I left those positions, they remained my mentors. A good leader will not give you the answers, they will provide you with questions and help guide you to get to the answer on your own.


How are you going about mentoring others? My mentees would say “she’s tough.” I assign homework…I ask probing questions and get my mentees to tell me what they are going to work on moving forward. The mentee needs to drive the relationship. The follow-up needs to be there. The mentee needs to really want the relationship. It is a two-way exchange. I will always learn something from my mentees. It is not a one-sided relationship.


Overall, what’s your advice for advancing in this industry? I am an advocate for bringing your full self to work every day because that is when you can be the most productive and the hap- piest. Regardless of the industry, you’re in the business of people – how you lead others, how you treat others, and how you work through others, it all makes a difference. I am also an advocate for DEI. If you don’t have the diversity of thought or experiences, you’re missing out. We all can benefit from our differences.


How do you show up as a leader? When I was new to Starbucks, all I knew was how to work in an all-male dominated industry from my days at ExxonMobil. Essentially, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I learned that I needed to read the room and change the way I approached people and projects. I needed to make sure to value people, make them feel like they are part of a team and support them in a construc- tive way. This is where I learned empathetic leadership, where I needed to pivot from being “bossy” to leading with empathy and grace. I am always open to criticism because I can take what I hear from my “critics” so that I can learn and grow as a leader.
