ATTRACTING CAREGIVERS BY DESIGN
break down barriers not only with the staff but also with the wider community, according to DeGroff at Perkins Eastman. “It could create more acceptance of the aging process.” At Belmont Village, a theater for residents at its project in La
Jolla, Calif., is also used for in-service training of 50-60 employees at a time. “We are breaking barriers not creating them,” says Will. She adds that residents like seeing the space being used for em- ployees. However, there are boundaries. For example, employees are only in the dining room to work, not to eat. Environmental branding can help reinforce the company’s cul-
ture, sources say. Separate from its online presence, environmental branding is how the company positions itself throughout the build- ing. The branding goes well beyond a strategically placed logo over the front desk. Rather, photos, artwork, and signage are used to make a great first impression and reinforce the company’s mis- sion in the lobby, public areas, and meeting rooms. For example, photos of a charity event may be displayed to showcase a cause the company believes in. Photos of employees for their good work reinforces a culture of appreciation. Applicants walk past the displays and understand implicitly
what’s important to the company. The branding reminds workers having a hard day that they have a job with a purpose. The staff not directly involved with residents – culinary, housekeeping, and maintenance workers – see how their contribution matters.

The meditation space is located between the entrance and hospice wing of the new building to give residents, families, and employees dedicated space for quiet reflection, prayer, or meditation. Spaces like these can foster a sense of belonging and inclusivity for employees of varying backgrounds.
