THE MAGAZINE FOR THE DRAINAGE, WATER & WASTEWATER INDUSTRIES
ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS
In 2022 the Board’sWorks Supervisor, John Davis, began speaking with GEM Plant Sales about whatWacker Neuson could offer and was immediately impressed with the build quality, backup support, technological and technical scope, and the attention to detail from both themanufacturer and Graham Mortimore, the founder of GemPlant Sales.
After several site visits to the see both the larger wheeled offerings and the tracked variants, it was decided on the 6.5 tonne wheeled excavator with a double boom, extended dipper, and additional STEELWRIST omni-hitch.
To compliment the bespokemachine, the Board also requested several unusual implements which led it to conversations withWest Country attachment specialist,
EXAC-ONE. They were able to provide a menu of specialist arborist and pioneering equipment to suit theWacker Neuson. After demonstrations at their site in Swindon, the Board also opted for the tree shear and themulcher head.
The tree sheer can cut up to 300mmand retain cuttings using a unique gripping arm. Themulcher head features a fixed teeth drumthat activates on the use of the rotational circuit, allowing for high impact debris and brash clearance and excellent control duringminor tree grinding.
Completing the order was a 2mBradshaw type bucket fromFLAILS DIRECT to allow for weed and reed clearance works to be carried out. Due to the system requirements of the bucket however, additional low flow circuits had to be
New NORAG halts CSO Sewage Litter
At a time when themedia constantly shows footage of unsavoury sewage litter fromCombined Sewage Overflows (CSOs) that pollute rivers and beaches, FluidMotion Solutions, part of the global NOV group (National Oilwell Varco) are backing a new patented product, NORAG, which has been designed to prevent such occurrences.
Developed by Samatrix, NORAG is a maintenance-free solution that has no moving parts and requires no electrical power. Using the Venturi effect, NORAG continuously draws off sewage debris fromwithin the CSO screening chamber during stormconditions and high flows, allowing the screen to operate (as designed) for longer. This ultimately reduces the frequency of unconsented spills that result in sewage litter being sent to water courses.
Fabricated from316-grade stainless steel, NORAG has a product lifespan of around 30 years. It can be adapted to fit into most existing CSO’s without the requirement for costly excavations or structuralmodifications. NORAG simply

returns any drawn off debris back into themain flow for disposal at the treatment works.
NORAG inventor and SamatrixMD, Samuel Munn commented: “The industry knows that due to ever increasing andmore extreme stormevents, existing screening systems alone can’t prevent the influent fromthickening; resulting in inevitable screen blinding, eventually sending all this very unpleasant waste over the blocked screen into rivers and on to beaches. These measures are nomatch for today’s wastewater challenges. They are, unfortunately, doomed to fail.”
installed, representing a technical challenge to the build as it required multiple settings, hook-ups, and limiters.
With the knowledgeable support of the teamat GEM, they were able to install a systemthat allows this vital piece of equipment to not only be used but to be easily swapped out and changed depending on the tasks at hand.
Commenting on behalf of the Board, Oliver Pantrey said: “Themachine will see its first outing on the watercourses this summer and the Board would like to thank John, Graham, the staff at GEM PLANT SALES,WACKER NEUSON, Andrew and Doug at EXAC-One, FLAILS DIRECT, and the teamat STEELWRIST for their expertise, patience, and quality service to deliver this incredibly diverse product.”

Neil Davies, Director of Industrial Business Development for NOV’s Fluid Motion Solutions, added: “Rather than simply trying to improve the screen in a CSO, which others have tried, but not
resolved, we see the huge benefits in how Norag tackles the problemof sewage litter pollution. It is a completely different approach;making CSOs work farmore efficiently and effectively. This is a golden opportunity for the water industry to stop ghastly sewage-related debris frombeing seen in rivers and on beaches.”
