Picote Cannon simplifies smaller diameter lining installations

Picote Solutions has for many years been involved with the rehabilitation of smaller diameter pipelines such as lining drainage pipes in buildings. One of the areas of concern that has long held interest to Picote’s designers has been the limited access for specialised rehabilitation equipment in these situations. It has often been difficult to access the launch end of a pipeline for the insertion of a liner using traditional liner launch drums, even when the pipe has been cleaned, checked and is ready for renovation, due to their bulk, even for smaller diameter liners.

This being the case, the Picote team investigated the potential for a new piece of equipment that could be used in limited access areas that was less bulky, easy to handle and yet still able to achieve the ultimate aim of inserting a liner effectively, correctly and above all safely into the pipeline in question. The result is the Picote Liner Cannon.

Commenting on the process behind the development of the Cannon Lauri Kellokumpu, R&D Manager for Picote Solutions Oy Ltd in Finland said: “The reason why we decided to design the Cannon is because ordinary lining drums are so big and heavy, even the smallest ones. We have a lot of short lines to install particularly inside the buildings here in Finland. Since our Cannons are lighter and more compact than the ordinary drums, they are much easier to carry, especially between floors in high rise blocks and lining is easier in confined spaces, for example in kitchens. There are also times when it is not

possible to insert a liner from within the floor of a block so with Cannons it is possible to install from the roof of an apartment block.”

THE LINER CANNON

The Picote Cannon is a lightweight, transparent tool designed to assist in the installation of CIPP linings, particularly smaller diameters. The transparent shell allows the user to watch the lining process in real time as it progresses.

Picote Cannon utilises what is known as the Fast Lock System to install liners from DN50 (2 in) diameter to DN100 (4 in) diameter. The single Cannon inversion kit includes multiple inversion heads and a Fast Cap to cover the varying diameter installations. As well as the Original Cannon and for particularly tight spaces and shorter liner lengths the Cannon is also available as the Cannon Mini.

“It is such a great solution for short shots as the Cannon models come with inversion heads for 2 in (50 mm) to 4 in (100 mm) diameter.. The fact that the Cannons are transparent is a very unique feature and will be helpful during the lining process. The Cannons provide great value and are very simple practical solutions for teams out on job sites.” said Picote’s Worldwide Technical Director Jake Saltzman.

Both systems are constructed using heavy-duty polycarbonate and aluminium and both are easier to operate than standard inversion drums. The systems are safe to use with two independent pressure release systems and a maximum operating pressure of 2 bar (29 psi). There is also an option to insert a CCTV camera inside the Cannon to monitor progress during the insertion process thereby immediately ensuring that the liner is correctly installed without recourse to a secondary CCTV survey.

The Original Cannon is designed to install liners over lengths up to 7 m (23 ft) for a DN100 (4 in) diameter liner; 10 m (32 ft) for a DN70 (3 in) diameter liner and 15 m (49 ft) for a DN50 (2 in) liner.

The Cannon Mini is designed to offer installation lengths of 3.5 m (11 ft) for a DN100 (4 in) diameter liner; 5 m (16 ft) for a DN70 (3 in) diameter liner and
