Lotus or anything else. Those objects can be shared, bringing plug and play capabilities. IBM has sought to deliver CBM tools using the Eclipse framework to achieve interoperability. Work has been done to enhance the business content for compliance needs; other work has been to do with further linking the IFW data, process and integration models with Websphere and Rational. The other aspect of the work is extending it beyond its retail banking product roots, including for corporate/wholesale payments. An early adopter was National Australia Bank. It wanted
a centralised approach to processing across its UK and Irish subsidiaries (at this time, Yorkshire Bank, Clydesdale Bank, National Irish and Northern Bank). IFW was the way it articulated this and removed local idiosyncrasies. IFW and FSDM were also used on the designs of the core retail banking system which was developed in the 1990s by the Spanish rural banks and today resides with Temenos as Temenos Corebanking.
Some of the earliest contributors to IFW, Westpac and
CBA, are still involved in its evolution and are using today’s form. Royal Bank of Canada has been using some of the process models. SE Banken and ABN Amro were also cited as takers. IBM actually claimed over 200 takers of IFW worldwide,
of which over half were in Europe, 50 or so in the Americas and 26 in Asia Pacific.
IBM was able to tout IFW as an enabler for an SOA approach. This seemed fair, as the whole idea of this type of strategy is to define and build generic processes which can be reused across the business, separate from the point applications. The elements that make up IFW support the analysis and design needs for such an approach. All of this modelling activity can appear to be too far from
reality, a bunch of techies sitting in IBM Dublin for a couple of decades drawing boxes and thinking up new acronyms. IBM’s inability to come up with too many examples of tangible projects reinforces this perception. But if banks really are now going back to basics and rethinking their business processes, then perhaps IFW’s time has come. Every bank will have its anomalies but it could constitute a useful basis for definition, with its usefulness aided either side of the design stage by IBM’s linkage efforts. Of course, the problem is that banks already have myriad systems, each with its own data definitions. But ultimately, there needs to be a single source of data definitions and vocabulary. The third-party models – which typically come with a fairly hefty price tag – might merely be adding yet
