Welcome from our Chief Executive, Ron Middleton

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Compton Hospice’s Newsletter and Annual Review 2013-2014.

The hospice has existed since 1982 and has been providing a comprehensive range of palliative care services to patients, their families and carers encompassing the catchment areas of Wolverhampton, South Staffordshire, Dudley, Walsall, Sandwell and East Shropshire for over 32 years. During this period there has been growth of existing services and the innovation of new activities, and discussions regarding the future strategy indicate a need to continue this trend.

Over the last 12 months there has been an uplift in the number of patient admissions to our Inpatient Unit with an 8% increase in the number of occupied bed days compared to the previous year. Bed occupancy has also increased from 89% to 92.5% and is reflective of a growing demand for this service.

The work of our homecare services (including Hospice at Home and our Clinical Nurse Specialist Service) show that patients are presenting with increasingly complex symptoms which require dedicated and specialist support. The growth in the number of telephone calls to our homecare services also reflects an approach of seeking to care for these patients through a more efficient method of communication.

During 2013-2014 the hospice received a further unannounced visit by the Care Quality Commission and this inspection addressed different standards to those inspected during 2012-2013. I am delighted to be able to report that Compton Hospice achieved all of the quality standards considered by the Commission with no recommendations for improvement. We continue to meet with our lead NHS partner - Wolverhampton Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) - to consider quality and other operational matters and these meetings prove to be both extremely useful and positive in terms

of ensuring that the hospice’s future strategies are in keeping with those of the CCG.

My contribution to this publication would not be complete without a word of thanks to Dr David Fairlamb, who retired as a Trustee at our Annual General Meeting in September 2014. David was the hospice Chairman for the three years preceding John Harris’s appointment in March 2012 and during that time David was always most supportive to me in my role, as indeed John has been for the past two years.

In conclusion I wish to express my sincere appreciation to all who have supported Compton Hospice during 2013-2014 be they donors, staff or volunteers.
