Department of Health Grant funds Hospice Improvements
In April 2013 the Department of Health announced that a total of £60 million had been awarded to fund improvements to the physical environment of adult and children’s hospices across England.
We were delighted to learn that Compton Hospice would benefit from the initiative having been awarded a total of £529,975 to make physical improvements at our main hospice site as well as at our Cedars site which is home to our Lymphoedema and Bereavement services.
Now, almost 18 months later, we are pleased to report that both projects have been successfully completed. At our main hospice site, funding from the grant has been used to purchase two new specialist disabled access vehicles which enable us to transport patients safely and comfortably from their homes to the hospice. Work has also been carried out to turn an under-utilized communal bathroom into an overnight stay room for family and relatives who are visiting loved ones on our Inpatient Unit, and disabled access to our therapy unit has improved with the addition of a new lift.
Over at our Cedars site extensive building work has been carried out to extend and improve facilities for both patients and relatives accessing our Lymphoedema and Bereavement services. An extension to our existing Lymphoedema clinic has resulted in the creation of a new reception, the addition of a shower room and improvements made to the treatment and consulting rooms. Our Bereavement service has also benefited from the addition of two new counselling rooms which are warm, inviting and suitable for both individual and group counselling sessions.
Such improvements and the addition of new facilities will help Compton Hospice to provide even better services for our patients and their loved ones. We are incredibly thankful to the Department of Health for this fantastic opportunity to help improve services for those who deserve to have access to the very best palliative and end of life care.
