Charity single hits the high notes
A charity single released in aid of Compton Hospice has hit the high notes reaching number 1 in the Amazon Folk charts.
The single, ‘I Vow to Thee Black Country’ is a version of the patriotic classic ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’ and is performed by Dudley folk band ‘The Empty Can’. Lead singer James Stevens, aged 36, originally came up with the idea for the song back in January. James comments: “I am so proud of my Black Country roots. I was born and bred in Dudley and the rest of the band are from the Black Country. I Vow to Thee My Country is a very patriotic song and I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to show how passionate we are about the Black Country by changing the lyrics.”
It wasn’t long before the song caught the attention of organisers of the 2014 Black Country Festival who decided to adopt ‘I Vow to Thee Black Country’ as the regions official anthem, and made plans to release the song as a charity single.
Compton Hospice was chosen as the charity to benefit from the proceeds of the single in memory of Steve Evans. Steve touched the hearts of thousands up and down the country as he publicly documented his two year battle with stomach cancer by taking part in numerous radio and TV interviews, as well as tweeting regular updates to his 22,000 twitter followers who he affectionately named his ‘twitter family’. Before his death on 16th January 2014 Steve and his family received support from Compton Hospice’s community nursing team, and it was one of Steve’s final wishes to raise money for Compton Hospice.
I Vow to Thee Black Country was officially launched on May 27th at the Black Country Living Museum. The support of the public and media interest from across the region meant it wasn’t long before the single headed to number 1 in the Amazon Folk Charts and number 32 in the UK official independent singles chart recently.
Compton Hospice is extremely proud and honoured to be associated with the official Black Country anthem. Having supported patients with incurable illnesses across the Black Country for over 30 years we are delighted that funds raised from the sale of this single will help us to continue to support families across this fantastic region for many years to come.
We would like to encourage all of our supporters to get behind the anthem and help raise money to fund patient care at Compton Hospice. The single is available to download from iTunes, Amazon, Google Play and Spotify (search for ‘I Vow to Thee Black Country’) for just 99p.
