Carlson Wagonlit Travel sales hit by energy sector slump


THE GLOBAL DROP IN ENERGY PRICES has hit Carlson Wagonlit Travel’s sales figures for last year. According to the travel management firm’s 2015 financial results, transactions in Latin America fell 7.8 per cent due to the “weight of the energy sector” and “economic recession in Brazil”. There were also drops in transactions in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, although North America saw sales climb 1.1 per cent. Asia Pacific volumes were stable. CWT president and CEO Douglas Anderson said 2015 was a “challenging year” for the industry, with the “continued sharp fall” in energy prices and oil in particular. Overall sales volumes at the TMC reached US$24.2 billion, which CWT said “reflects the curtailment” in travel expenses by energy customers. CWT said it was a “strong year” for its app, CWT To Go, with a 62 per cent growth in user registrations to 560,000.

Aviation bosses back EU ‘in’ campaign


CHIEF EXECUTIVES OF SOME OF THE UK’S LARGEST BUSINESSES have backed the UK to remain in the European Union. Leaders – including those from Heathrow, Gatwick and Easyjet – signed a letter published in The Times which said an EU exit could threaten jobs, investment and growth.


The letter said: “Business needs unrestricted access to the European market of 500 million people in order to continue to grow, invest and create jobs. We believe that

leaving the EU would deter investment and threaten jobs. It would put the economy at risk.”


Speaking about the EU’s impact on trade, aviation and British prosperity, Heathrow CEO John Holland-Kaye said: “Heathrow believes that the UK will be better off remaining in a reformed EU. We are the UK’s only hub airport, connecting Britain to over 80 long-haul destinations. We recognise that for business to thrive we also need to be part of the single European market.”

Shore up defences


Encourage your employees to install malware protection, firewalls and security patches on to their personal devices – including computers, tablets and smartphones.


Keep eyes peeled Employees can now work from almost anywhere, so they should be mindful of wandering eyes if working in public. Don’t plug it in


Be wary of USB sticks, of which their origin is often unknown. Change passwords


It should go without saying, but employees should be updating their passwords regularly and using different passwords for different applications. Close up shop


Whenever leaving their computer, employees should lock their screens to provide an extra layer of protection. Think before clicking


A seemingly innocent email may be contaminated, so employees should always be sure of links they are clicking on. If in doubt, delete.


While we never want to imagine that our organisation’s information can be compromised, it is an unfortunate reality of our digital world. However, by remaining vigilant in every online interaction, you can encourage your employees to greatly minimise the risk.
