Europe | market analysis

increased use of polypropylene is particularly benefit- ting from the strength of the housewares market and is used by 96% of the sites supplying to this market. The Spanish and Portuguese injection moulding

markets were hit hard by the recession from 2008 onwards. Their GDP only started to show sustained growth from 2014 and this has resulted in a growth in polymer demand. But total number of injection moulding sites and machinery for both countries have declined between 2012 and 2017. Spain has a particularly large demand for preforms

to support its mineral water and drinks packaging market, with Resilux, Alpla and Retal all having manufacturing capabilities in Spain. Polymer demand in the country’s automotive sector is recovering well despite the decrease in sites. Currently, over 300 Spanish injection moulding sites in AMI’s database supply to the automotive market. Portugal also has a well-developed automotive

industry in which the country is investing heavily to retain and develop the sector. AMI’s database has just under 100 injection moulding sites serving the automo- tive market in Portugal. In volume terms, packaging is

also a significant sector, with Logoplaste, the blow and injection moulding giant, a notable packaging group based in Portugal. The general trend across West European countries

reflects a slow recovery from the recession. These countries still have strong injection moulding industries but, apart from Germany, they have all witnessed a decrease in manufacturing sites over the last four years. So, has the injection moulding industry in Central
