improving dimensional and mechanical stability as well as reliability, the supplier says. It adds that, “while conventional housing materials such as PA66 show environmental stress cracking in contact with road salts like calcium chloride, A. Schulman’s new grade raises the chemical resistance of the housing and provides enhanced protection.” A grade with further improved flowability, Schulamid 612 GF 33 H2 SF, is available for even filigree designs, reducing the injection pressure and minimizing the stress on sensitive electronic parts during the moulding process. es for use in injection moulding. Albis recently added two more masterbatches to its own brand portfolio: Alperform Light Diffusion (based on a polycarbonate) and Alperform Light Blocking (ABS). Alperform LD is said to offer users a great deal of
flexibility to adjust light transmission and scattering during processing. “It’s a cost-efficient alternative for the production of diffusors for LED lighting applications made of polycarbonate,” says the company. Alperform LB, meanwhile, provides significantly increased light reflection and very low light transmission, making it ideal for the self-colouring of highly reflective and light-blocking LED light housings and reflectors made of ABS and PC/ABS.
New standards for trains Several companies have in recent months made play of their ability to produce flame retardant polyamides for electrical components that meet the new European standard EN 45545 for fire protection for rail vehicles. Independent compounders Eurostar, Lati, Nilit Plastics (now part of Celanese), and Vamp Tech are among them, and now polymer producer Evonik is another, with a new grade of polyamide 12. It says Vestamid LX9115 is distinguished by low toxicity and smoke density. Evonik says Vestamid LX9115 shows high dynamic
stress resistance and high impact resistance even at low temperatures. The new black coloured compound can be used in sensitive interior as well as exterior applications; the coloration does not affect the fire protection properties. In addition to rail applications, Vestamid LX9115 may be used in any other areas requiring a high degree of fire protection. DSM claims to be the first plastics producer in the world to offer a portfolio of materials that meet the
