Arburg’s annual Technology Days event at its Lossburg headquarters in Germany in March proved to be a truly record breaking event. Not only did it attract its biggest ever attendance – more than 6,700 visitors from 53 different countries crossed the company’s threshold over the five-day open house – but it took place against the background of yet another
record-breaking financial performance for the machin- ery maker and its strongest ever showing in the all-electric moulding sector. In an update on the
company’s financial perfor- mance, Arburg Managing Partner Michael Hehl said he expected the firm to post a consolidated turnover for 2016 of €630m, up by €50m on its 2015 result. “This is yet another new record – the third in a row,” he said. All-electric machines
played a key part in achieving this new record result, and particularly the new Golden Electric range introduced in
2016. “In the electric machines segment, the value of incom- ing orders [in euros] was 14% above the figure for the previous year. The relevant share of turnover has risen from 22% in 2015 to 27% in 2016,” Hehl said. Hybrid machines accounted
for 16% of turnover, up from 14% in 2015. Hydraulic models, however, have seen a decline in both share and absolute value terms (from 64% of total turnover in 2015 to 57% last year). Hehl said this clearly shows the growing value attached to electric machines and drives by injection machinery buyers and validates the company’s strategy of offering a range that extends from its entry level Golden Electric to high performance AllDrive and HiDrive models.

Growing up Alongside the growth in all-electric machine sales, Hehl said Arburg’s strategy of extending its machine range upwards in size is paying dividends. “The importance of our large Allrounder machines
with clamping forces of more than 2,500kn [250 tonnes] has also steadily increased in recent years. The share increased from 21 to 24% between 2015 and 2016,” he said.
The latest addition to
Arburg’s large machine offering was one of the key exhibits during the Technology Days event. Unveiled at the K show in Germany last year, the 650 tonne Allrounder 1120 is striking for both its size and design (the work of German agency Design Tech, which also styled the company’s Freeformer additive manufac- turing machine). Arburg Managing Director of
Technology and Engineering Heinz Gaub said the 1120 machine has been well received by customers and the roll out of the new model is now under- way. “We will supply three or four machines this year in a pilot process,” he said. “This [pilot introduction] is very important for us at Arburg; we did the same with the Free- former. These are customers that are close to us.” The Allrounder 1120 is the
