The new PBT grade has optimized product properties specifically for this application, combining the high flowability and very good impact strength necessary for thin-walled plug-in connectors. Ultradur B4340ZG2 HSP also boasts very good


electrical properties. The CTI is 600 V, permitting extremely short distances between the conductor tracks in plug-in connectors.

Automotive connectors At last November’s Electronica trade fair in Munich, DSM unveiled ForTii Ace JTX8, which was developed specifically for automotive electronic connectors. This is one of the very few polyamide grades in the world so far to have secured, in all product designs, the JEDEC MSL 1 (moisture sensitivity level 1) rating. This means that parts will not blister during high temperature soldering, even after being stored for long periods (see Injection World December 2016 for more on this). Rui Zhang, Marketing Manager, Connected Car, at DSM says that with other solutions in the market, a connector designer always needs to make a compro- mise to carefully design around the brittleness of the material, the weak weld lines, or the low peak tempera- ture resistance. ForTii Ace JTX8 is also said to be an ideal match for


automotive electronics applications in environments of up to 200°C. It contains copper iodide salt-based stabilizer, which can create corrosion issues on metal contacts. DSM says the new grade can match the thermal stability of a standard copper iodide stabilized PPA. Several other suppliers have introduced “electrically


neutral” grades to combat this corrosion problem. DuPont, for example, has expanded its Electrically Friendly (EF) product line in its Zytel portfolio with the introduction of PA66 15%, 25% and 30% glass reinforced and with PA6 30% glass reinforced grades.
