Playmobil, Cardinal Health and Toly are just a few of the many international companies involved in the plastics industry that are making a success out of their Malta-based operations

Malta – more than a place in the sun

The Mediterranean island of Malta has a buoyant plastics manufacturing industry attracted by its combination of a skilled, flexible workforce and attractive business environment

Malta has the necessary local expertise to support automated production

Injection moulding, and more generally manufacturing, are not typically the first things that spring to mind when people hear of Malta. However, this year this Mediterranean island will mark the 50- year presence of some major players in its manufacturing sector – a sector that contributes more than 13% to the country’s GDP even before accounting for ancillary services. An important part of Malta’s advanced manufacturing community is made up of companies in the plastics sector. Indeed, some of the operators that have been in the country the longest are from this very sub-sector. Employing over 2,500 persons – which amounts to about 10% of all full-time employees in Malta’s manufacturing sector – the country’s plastics industry can boast a number of important international players. These companies include: Trelleborg and the Hutchinson Group, which develop and manufacture o-rings and bonded seals for the automotive and industrial industries; the German toy-manufacturer Playmobil; Methode Electronics, which maintains a large plastics division supporting its development of components for the automotive and aerospace industries; as well as the cosmetics packaging manufacturer Toly, which has its global headquarters and development centre on the island. Today, Malta-based manufacturers in the plastics sector service a wide array of clients ranging from Airbus to Audi, Dior to Daimler Chrysler, and many others.

Initially attracted to the island in the early phase of the country’s industrialisation due to the combination of low wage costs and an already well-trained workforce, these companies and others like them
