particularly high flowability. It is said to be particularly suitable for use in connectors and program switches in unattended household appliances. IEC 60335–1 covers requirements placed on plastics

to be used in electrical components of unattended household appliances. These include primarily washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers as well as stoves and ovens, but also smaller devices fitted with a timer function such as coffee makers. Ultramid B3U50G6 achieves a UL 94 V-0 classifica- tion at 0.8 mm. The CTI is at 500 V and allows narrow creeping distances between two contacts.

highest flame resistance requirements of standards organizations all around the world and which also have the required electrical properties. It says specially developed Akulon PA66 and EcoPaXX PA410 grades not only enable OEMs to meet the EN 60335-1 international standard on safety of household and similar appliances, but they also meet more stringent individual OEM requirements.

DSM points out that with the growth of the IoT,

consumers increasingly have the ability to remotely control electrical and electronic devices in their homes from their smart phones and tablets. The addition of new functionality to home appliances is a crucial design driver, DSM says. “There is however concern about the safety of appliances that can be switched on and operated without any direct human supervision.” So performance requirements for appliance

connectors are increasing, but not uniformly: there are important regional differences in the standards that are applied. As a result, connectors fitted to equipment sold in one regional market are often made in a different material from those on equipment sold into another market. What would simplify logistics considerably for global OEMs which purchase and market worldwide are connector materials that meet all the relevant industry requirements, wherever they end up. DSM says that close cooperation with leading OEMs

and connector manufacturers has led it to develop materials that not only achieve a UL 94 flamma- bility rating of V-0 at 0.4mm, but which enable end products to pass the IEC 60695-11-10 Glow Wire Test (GWT) without igniting at 850°C, and which also have a CTI of 400V and higher. halogen-free, antimony-free flame-retardant 30% glass fibre reinforced PA6. The light-colourable grade reliably meets the household appliance standard IEC 60335–1 (GWIT 800°C at 1 mm) and provides a

High temperatures At Radici Performance Plastics, European Marketing Manager Erico Spini says the company is moving ahead with applications development for its new Aestus polyamide 6T-based PPA, which it introduced last year at K 2016. The company is concentrating on products that demand high heat resistance, even in thin-wall sections, such as housings for electronic components that are attached to boards using lead-free soldering. Spini also highlights Radici’s strength in PA6 and 66 halogen- and phosphorus-free flame retardant grades for terminal blocks and connectors. In particular, Radiflam AFR, an unfilled PA66 grade, achieves a UL 94 V-0 rating at 0.4 mm. BASF also introduced a new polyphthalamide (PPA)

portfolio last year, Ultramid Advanced N, for sophisti- cated components in the automotive and electronics industries. Unlike most other PPAs, this is not based on PA6T. BASF does not say what amine it is based on, but it is a longer-chain type. It has much lower water uptake than PA6T, giving it high dimensional stability and enabling it to fulfil up to JEDEC MSL 1. “Although all electrical machines and electronic

systems are the object of miniaturization processes, for inductors and transformers this trend has to come to terms with the ever-increasing performance require-
