Esprix Technologies is promoting the availability of polyketone engineering thermoplastics in a variety of injection moulding, extrusion, neat or compounded grades. As we reported in last month’s Compounding World, polyketone resins have recently re-entered production in Korea and offer a range of benefits including low creep, excellent resistance to chemicals and fuels, good gas barrier properties, plus abrasion resistance. ❙

The Flexible Vinyl Alliance and the SPI are demonstrating the contribution made by flexible PVC for medical applications with their “Vinyl Saves Lives” display in the lobby of the South Hall at NPE. Among the showcased items is a portable medical isolation containment unit. This is similar to those used in Africa and elsewhere to isolate patients and protect medical personnel and the populace from the spread of infectious diseases including Ebola and SARS. Personal protective equipment such as garments, masks and shoe covers are also on display. The goal is to demonstrate that plastics used in the manufacture of medical products are safe and necessary for appropriate patient care. ❙

Huntsman is using NPE to highlight its capabilities in thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs). These include Avalon grades for footwear applications, Irogran products for wire and cable, and Krystalgran TPUs for film and sheet production. A relatively recent develop- ment is the launch of FCM food contact grades of Irogran TPUs. These are used in applications such as harvesting and picking equipment, processing and dispensing machinery, conveyor belts and other food and drink-related processes. ❙

RTP is releasing new tribology data to help the designers of medical devices
Kureha America is focusing on its KF Polymer melt processable PVDF, which offers good chemical and abrasion resistance, a low coefficient of friction, good thermal ageing, and withstands exposure to UV, gamma radiation and fire. The company says that the polymer can be used at temperatures up to 150˚C, making it suitable for a wide range of applications in areas such as pumps, valves and housings. ❙

Metabolix is promoting its Mirel PHA biopolymers for a range of resin applications requiring biobased content and/or biodegradable properties. It is also showing how they can be used to enhance the properties of a range of other polymers. For example, PHA can improve the performance of PLA bioplastics, increasing the latter’s strength and ductility. Metabolix is also exploring how PHA can be used as
a processing aid and a performance modifier in a range of PVC compounds, including rigid and flexible formula- tions. The company says that it allows torque reduction when processing highly-filled formulations. It can also reduce the migration of primary plasticizers and provide UV stability. ❙

Momentive Performance Materials is show- casing its latest silicone elastomer developments in Orlando this month. These include Silopren LSR 3376/50, a new low-volatile, self-lubricating liquid silicone rubber (LSR) that does not require post-curing. Target applications include electrical connector seals for the automotive industry. Another recent Momentive development is Silopren Matrix 70 fibre-reinforced LSR which can be used in applications requiring the features of silicone rubber combined with added strength. Examples include wrist bands for wearable electronic devices. The reinforced LSR has 30% higher torsion resistance and 100% higher modulus, which can eliminate the need to incorporate a fabric layer. ❙

Polymax TPE is introducing a range of premium compounds targeted at sensory-sensitive applications such as cap liners and wine closures. The new TPEs are said to be characterised by low extractables, organolep- tic neutrality, good sealing properties and high clarity. The products meet most food and beverage contact standards applicable in the US and Europe, and are fully recyclable. ❙
