Helping designers get a feel for plastics


Designers wanting to get an instant “feel” for a particular plastic can now do just that using a new plastic sample set from MaterialSampleShop. The set contains a range of


polymer samples, including ABS, PP, PC, PVC, PSU, PBT and EVA, each moulded in the same shape to allow a simple comparative assessment to be made of stiffness, density and appearance. The mouldings also highlight a range of surface qualities and aspects such as tendency to sink at thick sections.


The set was designed by Markus Paloheimo, a designer


at Plasticprop in Finland. “I run a design consultancy specialized in plastic product design and I needed a tool that makes it easy to communicate and understand the properties of different plastic material,” he said. MaterialSampleShop has been marketing the set in Scandinavia since the begin- ning of this year and claims it is already in use with Siemens, Velux and Danfoss.  www.materialsampleshop.com


SKZ developing in-line dispersion monitoring


Germany’s SKZ plastics processing centre at Würzburg is working with the IFAK Magdeburg automation institute to develop a new ultrasound-based measure- ment technique for determin- ing the degree of dispersion of additives in molten plastics. Effective dispersion is


critical in the production of high quality compounds but current technologies are either based on offl ine analysis or in-line measurement of bypass melt streams. A key advantage of the new technique is that

access is only required from one side of the sample, making it suitable for in-line installa- tion in production equipment. The researchers aim to


develop an inline-capable process, which enables characterization of the degree of dispersion at industrial- relevant melt channel diameters. Due to the application of modulated excitation signals, very short measuring and reaction times and high penetration depths are said to be possible.  www.skz.de
